strategy pc games

my favourite is warcraft 2, followed by red alert 2. but those are ancient now.

nowadays i play men of war, total war series (shogun was best), and for a real strategy hearts of iron 3.

All this talk and very little mention of Civilization. The first response should have mentioned it and then closed the thread as there is nothing more to say :D.

Playing either Civ III or IV will give you all the strategic gaming you need. I can't in all honesty recommend Civ I or II any more, excellent games they were the latter versions are just too much better. As for V, I can't wait, it is one of only two games I am looking forward to this year and the other is a MMO.

I don't like Civ 4. Played a big map with 8 AI and ran out of memory, causing it to crash just as the game got interesting... :(

May have to start playing it again in the future, along with AOE2 and Cossacks... But i'm always worried i'll spend way too much time on them. :o

One reason to go to 64 bit O/S - Civ 4 doesn't run out of memory addressing

anyway
Civilization (any version)
master of Orion 1 + 2 (MOO3 is pants)
master of magic
Heroes of Might & magic series
Total War - series
Rise of Nations
Settlers
Galactic Civilizations ( 1 + 2)
Ascendancy
Age of Empires series
Age of Mythology
Railroad Tycoon series
Roller Coaster Tycoon series
Theme park (and hospital)
Syndicate
Dungeon Keeper 1 + 2
King's Bounty series
Xcom

and many many more

Hearts of Iron 3. Not played it yet because it scares the **** out of me as it looks so incredibly in depth.

I have it, after playing for 30 hours I only understand about 46% of it.

But you should try the TW games, the older ones like Medieval II and Rome are the best. Or try Company of Heroes, simply awesome game.

Erm, I was using Vista x64... :p

The 2GB of ram is the issue however, going to have to wait til I get another couple... :(

I was already like , played with 17 civs on massive maps before and I never got civ 4 to crash, most stable game I've played ever prolly, even with mods it's solid!

If anyone is up for some AOE2: Conq games, just gimme a bell, anything, blood maps, random (standard) games, RPG's, I'm up for anything.

Civ 4 will crash for certain but it's usually large maps - it just tends to run your free memory into the ground. Have a decent about of memory though and 64 bit O/S and it's stable.

(Running win 7 64 6Gb and CIV4 BTS modded with Rise of mankind on large map and 15 civilizations here)
