Is anyone else having this issue, it will only happen once until i restart the PC then it's just pot luck when it will strike again

Sound just freezes up along with the screen, after 10-15 seconds the whole screen will just change to a colour (it seems to be a random colour but hey i don't know?)

After a few seconds im back on the desktop with a windows message:
"the display driver ati etc stopped responding"

I thought i would tough it up and see if driver updates sorted this but three months on and still nothing. First ATI card ive bought and nothing but problems. wish i listened to myself and stuck with Nvidia

Any help appreciated. Thanks!

What is the rest of your spec?
It could be conflict of some kind, leftover drivers from Nvidia clashing with ati, its not the first time it has happened.

I get exactly the same thing on my HD 5870 since upgrading from a hd4870. Its completely random and sometimes the screen recovers and sometimes i need to reboot my system..

Ive noticed that if it doesnt during actual gameplay it will normally recover okay to the desktop, if it does while a game is loading something. goodnight.

The rest of my spec is below, if anyone could help with this i would be very grateful:

3.0 Ghz Core 2 Duo E8500
4GB DDR2 800 Mhz Memory (Perhaps with noting that this is Nvidia SLI memory? i had a 8800 ultra before etc)
EVGA Nforce 680 motherboard (again i think its an nvidia chipset)

Looking at the nvidia badges i am starting to think there might be something to that nvida clashing etc

SLi memory had nothing to do with sli on gfx cards, it was just profiles like the JEDEC or whatever it was called that shows timings and voltages.

strangely enough i have just started having the same problems too. i was playing tom clancy's splinter cell - conviction, and all of a sudden it froze for 3 seconds, then greyscreened. i still had sound and could move around in the game. ctrl alt deleted, nothing, then suddenly windows came back with that display driver stopped responding thing. couldnt resume my game at all :( just was permanently minimized. the wierd thing though is i DID NOT upgrade my ati drivers from the 10.3 ogl4 version, and 2 days ago i noticed catalyst control panel had new features and all. HOW??? did it auto update or something? so i am thinking it is DEFINITELY a driver problem, becuase like i say i never had any issues until that ghostly upgrade. i guess all we can do is wait (and stop using beta drivers if it really upsets you). btw i play just cause 2 all the time, and it was perfect till the new ccc, where i have had that exact grey screen issue.
check your ccc and see if you have high quality af, new aaa (adaptive anti-aliasing) tab, and a temporal anti-aliasing features. if so, then what the heck is going on??

Would agree with you veryrandom but i have had the issues going back to the version 9 drivers, issue has remained the same all the way up to the 10.3 release =/

what i thought was that if it was a gpu hardware fault, your system would have frozen properly without resuming, but then again im not too clued up on that subject, you have a strange problem there man, cause its usually always the same problem with others (same colour, lines etc..) and yours changes. very very odd.
Sorry i couldnt be of more use, as that panicky feeling you get when things like that happen suck

well as it only happens once per system up time, im just putting up with it for now in the hope that an ew system in the future will sort it

Just bringing this up again, has anyone had any break throughs with this issue?

I have heard some mention of underclocking to solve it, but i dont see why is should pay for an advertised product then lower its peformance to make it work

Thanks

If it was me going from Nvidia to ATI, l would do a fresh install of the OS, thus insuring nothing is left of the Nvidia Drivers.
