Satnav advice needed

But then there's the hassle of turning on a PDA which takes ages, loading up iGo and then using the stylus!

Just get a Garmin as mentioned - even a used one will be fine, you can still get updates for them via Garmin Updater. I would have sold you mine for £50 but alas, it died :(

get a HP Ipaq 314 off ebay for ~£40 the built in nav software is crap but you can install whatever software you want on it (I run Igo8), its basically a PDA with gps built in but wide-screen with a 800x480 display, you cant get anything better for <£100

You can get better for the money - a TomTom or Garmin will be far better suited to the task. I've tried PDA, Mobile and Standalone satnavs and the only one that is actually any good is the standalone.

Some mobile versions are actually better in that they can update real time raffic info via your data connection as well as view satellite mapping instead of standard mapping for navigation. You can also live search POIs in your area and layer them on the map plus get streetview navigation.

Speaking about Google Maps Nav for Android of course.

These things are not available on any standalone today :p

TomTom One IQ Routes here and I find it excellent. Very intuitive. Doubt you can get one for <£100 that includes France, though you can add other maps apparently ;).

Turns on instantly and no need for a stylus (tho the is one with it) you can just use your fingers as its a pretty high res screen (was designed as a satnav)

Do you have an iphone 3gs?

If so, get copilot, £27 you cannot fault it for the price :)

It has a lot of included features but does not include traffic updates or additional maps but I believe you can purchase them as extra's.

Is the screen size big enough for you? How big is the screen? Looks small in pics.

It's about 3.5" I believe. It's fairly small but also plenty big enough for me, since I'm not blind. If you want one with a large wide screen then expect to pay more.

My brother-in-law has an iphone and tried to get the SatNav working with some third party software. The problem he found is that the iphone's GPS receiver isn't as good as that of a dedicated SatNav unit, meaning that in weaker signal areas, the phone would lost satellite reception. He ended up having to buy a powered booster and dock, which cost him another £100. I don't know what version of the iphone he has however, so it may be that some are better than others.

Then your brother in laws iphone has a problem, either that or its a 3g which has a shocking excuse for a gps receiver and just isn't worth the time which is why I asked about the 3GS rather than just the 3G.

I have exactly 0 problems with my satnav, when I had it running on my 3g it used to lag so very much and I ended up not using it, upgraded to the 3gs and haven't looked back.

So for £27 you get a fully fledged satnav with speed camera warnings and a nice big wide 3.5" display, and the best part is I don't have to have yet another piece of tech plugged in to my cig charger :) It also allows you to play music through it, then either mutes or quietens the music when voice announcements come up.

I would like to have a bit bigger creen satnav.

Seen some for under £100 at Halfords and some come with free maps etc etc. Any good?

Guess his must be a 3G then. I was impressed with the functionality now that he's got it set up. If having a 3GS solves all those problems then I can see how it would be a very good option, especially since you don't have to carry your phone AND a separate SatNav with you when you leave the car.
