upgrade bug (seti related)

Im getting the upgrade bug, i currently have a q6600 running at 3.6. What are the new x6 amd chips like for seti? Anyone use one yet? Considering that i have an ati graphics card, would i be better just buying a nvidia graphics card rather than upgrading the cpu?

For seti, a monster GPU will crunch more than a cpu, and cpu units are optimised for intel cpu's
Having said that, you would get 6 cores and they overclock well :D
 
I wouldnt concern yourself to much regards the cpu at the moment (unless money is no object to you), gpu computing is where its at in this game now.

Nvidia cuda cards are the only ones that have support for seti really, couple of minor exceptions.

Its all about cores, your cpu=4, i7=8, 8800GT=112, GTX 280=240.......I think you can see were this is going :)

Basically use this chart and get the best you can, best value 2nd hand are 8800GT's, 9800GX2's and GTX 280's imo :)

Dont touch the GTX 470'S AND 480'S for now, dont work but this is subject to change.

From what I have seen the GTX275/280/285 (240 cuda cores) can be closely matched by a GTX260 (216 cuda cores). I know there is a big differenece in price on new cards - but no idea on 2nd hand.
 
Granted, was thinking of the price mainly, dont have any experience of the 260, will look into that one mate :)

Good on you mate but you may need to set up a tent in there to beat miniyazz to anything tasty :p
 
On your recommendation, ive just made an offer on a gtx280 this morning :)
 
just to wrap this up, ive just got a 280 gtx fitted tonight. When did GPU's need all this extra power??? I have an enermax power supply that doesnt have an 8 pin plug so i had to use all the adapters..... my wiring wasnt brilliant before, now its just a mess! i finally got it working and boinc says noy work units for me at present. so i cant even see it working yet.
 
Congrats on getting the 280 K, yeah they can be quite a power draw the gpu's. It's just a matter of time untill you get some gpu work units, sometimes theres a shortage other times plenty. As long as boinc has recognised the gpu and is requesting gpu tasks you'll be flying in no time.

thanks for the reply installing the graphics card seems to have killed my stats!
i have been running seti for a while
 
Yeah mine was not great to start with, it takes time for your work units to be validated so for a time it will seem like your not getting anywhere fast but it will climb!

Your SETI handle is wrong in the original, which uses kev.morris instead of k3v.
 
my seti user name is kev.morris , My sig was working before, im not sure whats happened. I have to go out, ill have a look later :)
