My housemates believe my perfect job would be an estate agent. :p

So just wondering out of curiousity what it's like? Starting wage? Did you enjoy it? Any bad experiences? What are the downsides? What about the plus side of the job?

Dont do it. You will be loathed by the majority of the population and your starting salary will be crap as its all commission based unless youre a manager. These are just two of many bad points.

If youre lucky you may get a brief appearance on Homes Under The Hammer.

So many better jobs out there (despite what people say about the current climate).

Why? Are you arrogant, two-faced and unable to tell the truth? Willing to screw people over just to make an extra pound or two? Incapable of following through on promises or suggest corrective action when things (which you promised, incidentally) fail to transpire? Unanimously disliked - nay, hated - by the majority of right thinking folk?

Estate agents are worse than lawyers and auditors.

I dunno, lawyers at least in principle have to do work to earn their fee rather than acting as a human Google and skimming money off every transaction that really doesn't need them. :p Houseweb for the win :D

You'll be second only to lawyers on the list of most hated people in the world.

People will hate lawyers more than you.

Lawyers are actually well educated and intelligent, plus work damn hard for their money.

Estate agents are none of the above.

For me it's Lawyers > Estate agents > Dead babies > letting agents

IIRC Stinky is/was an estate agent.

I think the fact he quit and instead started doing security jobs whilst sleeping in the back of a van tells you all you need to know about how bad being an estate agent is.

It's a high pressure sales world full of people who couldnt cut it in a real high pressure situation but think they are awesome.

So you've been in the job then. :D

If your able to just pull a random number out of the air, when asked about the price of a house then go for it. To be a true professional though, the figure you state must be at least 20k different to another quote on the same property.

Im assuming you've never dealt with an estate agent before?

I get thinking that you'd be better at it than they are, most people feel that after dealing with them, but its not an occupation i could ever get into. I very nearly throttled one of the agents we dealt with to get our place.

I've never dealt with an estate agent before and i like property. Those are the only reasons my housemates said that. :p

I think i'm too nice anyways. I had enough problems working for DSGi by telling people not to waste £50 on MS Office and told them to download OpenOffice instead.

Just had a viewing at a house, see him roll up with his carphone warehouse suit and a white 10 plate Audi TT.
Must be doing well for himself I think as he rolls up, until he gets 20 yards away and i hear its a bloody dagdag! Disgusting. Lost my respect before he'd stepped out the car :p.

As said, being a manager/owning/running an agency, not too bad. Decent money, but a lot of idiots out there doing the job which tar the good ones with the bad reputation sadly.

Just working for one, not for me I'm afraid. Does depend on the agent but on the whole the money isn't great (it's not terrible either) and generally people will hate you.

What the hell is a dagdag?
