Just voted, slight ripoff warning ..

I'm in one of the most marginal constituencies, just one teller from the Conservatives. And when I walked past he didn't try to stop me.

It's a little odd, but it has been going on for years.

I actually remember when my dad ran as a district councillor having the voted numbers relayed back to his campaign HQ. He could then reference it against the information he'd collected while canvassing and see how he was doing. It was also used to make sure that people who's vocally supported him actually turned out to vote.

I went to my local one just a minute ago, the candidates were stood outside but no man in a suit like I was expecting.

Just walked in and put in a vote. The GF said something about the man in a suit only being there if it's a close area in terms of votes. Ours is predomanently conservative so probably why.

Well the ones at my station were being far from sneaky about it, each was wearing a rosette for their party.

Guess it depends how they go about it from station to station. That woman didn't seem to be on the ball very much.

Same here, there were two old ladies sitting outside who asked if they "could trouble you for your voter number", I said no and that was it. There was no exit poll people asking how you voted though which was a surprise given I'm in a fairly marginal seat.

Polling station is the village church.

Two old ladies sat at a table outside next to each other, one with a Blue rosette and one with a Yellow rosette. They were taking it in turns to ask if they "could trouble you for your voter number" and would read it out "680, thankyou sir" and both write it down.

Not got a problem with it in the slightest :).

Oh and the Conservative one lives along our road anyways!

you've just given a load of information unnecessarily to private parties
The only piece of information they didn't have already was the mere fact you voted. Not really a problem IMHO, you get swamped by stuff anyway at elections.

This happens all over the place, regardless of whether it's a marginal. Unfortunately I'm in one of the safest seats in the country and they still ask.

Make voting compulsory I say, then this won't matter :D

There wasn't anything like this at my local polling station, in fact we only saw one other person going in! I doubt there's a high voter turnout in my area though and Alasdair Darling is my MP so it's very much a Labour safe seat. I guess Gordon Brown is trying harder in his constituency because my aunt saw him when she went to vote.

Thanks for the heads up, I'ts my first time voting today so i'd probably have been suckered in by it :)

The guy had a blue rosette on, tory. I said to him "What, do I need to show you my card to get inside?" "No, i'm just..." "**** off you conservative filth" and walked inside.
Never trust anyone sporting tory propaganda, all liars.

Every time I'm in and I get a leaflet through my door that isn't lib dem I make sure I go out and give it back.

I got asked by a lady with a yellow (Lib Dem) rosette on if she could have my number. I said "No." and carried on walking.

I voted Lib Dem but that's irrelevant :p.

Just been and done my bit of democracy for the day. On the way in there was a little table with 3 guys sitting behind it, blue rosette on the desk and a woman ushering you through to the actual voting area. On the way out they said "we just need your number" and I asked why and got back "so that you don't get people knocking on your door in a few days" so I asked if I'd get any visitors in 5 years time and she only said "probably not" so I politely said no.

They didn't mention to anyone that you don't have to give that info unless you question them about it. Aside from that they use the word "need" which implies its not optional.

So he clearly displayed his party affiliation, honestly answered your question (well presumably would have done had you let him finish), then you hurled verbal abuse at him... nice.
