New car advice, £7k

You could get a nice BMW 540i for this price, I paid a lot less for mine but by the time you've fixed everything you're likely to find wrong or about to go wrong with a £5k or so model, it'll probably cost £7k. Also, it'll be older than your Saab, the newest possible is 2003 and you'll probably have to part with the full £7k just for the car then, probably a bit more for a really well cared for one. These prices are for a Sport, the SE's are quite a bit cheaper since they are less sort after.

Jez,

I was looking at Merc's and found a facelift CLK500 for £7k.

It's fast (0-60 in just 6 seconds), it looks new/nice, it's got all the kit. It's a 330ci with a better image and faster.

Is it a bad idea?

It's a 330Ci with a cheap plastic interior (It's rubbish, if it was any good I'd strongly consider getting a CLK55 AMG) and no handling, because its for wafting.

There is also something very wrong with it if its only £7k, a 2002 onwards CLK costs a boatload more than £7k. And the previous shape one is ancient and looks it.

Your a badge snob but own a saab? :D

The popular perception of BMWs was one of the reasons I bought mine - they do a good job of being quite anonymous and "nice".

Not sure a Merc has a better image though, mind

OP - You can have mine for 7k :D A year newer, half the miles, auto gearbox and some extras!

Probably, bet his rattles a bit more though :)

Oh, and mine has 13 speakers and 3 amps - that has to be worth 2k

Thanks for the offer but it's time to move on not across ;).

Still thinking of selling yours?

Thought as much :)

Yep, it's looking like it at the moment. I tried the webuyanycar and similar places (there's loads!) and managed to negotiate one up to £6400 which isnt too bad, but I'm holding out for 7

Why are they not particularly well built? Sounds like another reason not to buy ;)

Gives it personality :)

Its rather different to a 330ci, in that it has a better gearbox, more refined suspension, and a much better engine. Sadly it also has a W203 C-Class interior, and as such i wouldn't bother. You have running costs approaching that of a larger higher end model, but with a low end feel. Best to stick to the economy of the 330ci in this comparison.

As Fox says too, its too cheap :/

Whats the pick of the CLK bunch at this price point? I see CLK as a good alternative to the 330ci. Also how do the trim levels work? A good happy medium that I can see is the 350 V6 with 272PS, the draw back is price though as they were only released in 2005. :(

Thanks for all your help!

There is no pick of the clk at this price point. It only buys good first gen one and these are old and nothing like a 330.

And for decent MK2 you would need how much £?

To be honest mate they are not really my cup of tea, i dont really know a lot about the Mercedes range other than the cars which i am specifically interested in, as frankly a lot of the range is ruddy awful!

I know that the 272PS V6 is a very good engine, and is probably what i would pick if i were to be buying an SL now for example. I would put an uneducated wager on that engine not being available for £7k though?

Trim on the CLK's will (i assume, as i say i am not really into them) will be Sport, Elegance, and Avantgarde, with a lot of kit being pure options. "Sport" is basic, elegance is more luxurious, and Avantgarde is a more sporty version in terms of looks and trim. :)

Yep, no 350s for £7k. This always happenes when looking for cars; now I'm on to a 350 or 500 with AMG kit and Comand Sat Nav, the only problem is I'd need to double my budget.

Onward and upward I think.

LOL, really the car i was recommending was a CL500, which would be in budget, but will be pre facelift. Might be able to find one with AMG bits though...
