It will be time shortly to pass on my current rig to my son, so i'm having a completly new system. But i cannot decided between the following three systems,

1) Ultima Raptor" AMD Phenom II X6 Six Core 1090T Black Edition 3.20GHz @ 4.00GHz DDR3 System with 5870 gpu.

2) Ultima Vanquish" Intel Core i7 930 2.80GHz @ 4.00GHz Quad Core DDR3 System with 5870 gpu

3) Ultima Viper" Intel Core i7 930 2.80GHz @ 4.00GHz DDR3 System
with 5870 gpu

I would like to build it myself really but i don't relly have the time right now.

Going to be adding a,

Asus Xonar D1 7.1 PCI Sound Card (90-YAA0B0-0UAN00Z) [90-YAA0B0-0UAN00Z

Edimax EW-7727In nMax 300Mbps Wireless Desktop PCI Network Adapter [EW-7727In]

Monitor Dell SP2309w 23" Monitor 2048x1152 80000:1 300cd/m2 2ms Built in webcam 16:9 VGA/DVI/HDMI Black

Creative Gigaworks T40 Series II 2.0 Speaker System (51MF1615AA003) [51MF1615AA003

Cannot decide between amd 6 core or intel i7 4 core, mainly want something that will last me a while.
Do i go 6 cores with 4 gig ram or 4 cores and 6 gig ram ?

Case will be antec 902 with all three i think. Like amd as i am very fond of my 939 3800+ x2, it still serves me well even now with my 8800gt.

Have to the end of this month to decide.

Thanks in advance.:D

I would go for one of the i7 builds. An i7 at 4GHz slightly benches above a AMD hexacore at the same clock. Despite the AMD haveing more cores they have worse architechture.
Plus, if you're playing games, you'll be much better off with a quad core as games have only recently become quad supported and will therefore not fully utilise the six cores of the AMD.

Friend just got a Titan Viper recently, it's brilliant and he gets very good temps.(it's also very quiet.)

Also you do not really need a soundcard as the onboard sound is very good.

So it's i7 all so far, i understand that i7 is faster, but what about more cores in future when games catch up and are increasingly multi threaded?
Does i7 1366 still have future past next year. I thought intel were changing sockets again? Yes i know amd are too. But which will last me longer?

Ciff1, when that happens mate, the i7-980X will have come down, so just grab one of those and you're done ;)

Trust me mate, you won't have trouble.

with hypethreading the quad i7s will be able to keep up with the 6 cores anyway

Better overall system. Good bang for buck and performance ;)

The I7 920 beats the "6" core AMD in bench marks...not all of them but most, and that is at stock speeds. AMD need to produce a new architecture, they still use a tweaked AMD 64 from 2003.

I used to love AMD cpu's and they are great for budget PC's, but for gaming I7 or high end I5 all the way.

Also with I7 you can choose Crossfire or SLI, if you prefer a dual GPU set-up in future.

a stock i7 is faster in most applications than a phenom X6

this is an important factor to consider, maybe not currently as the gpu in any of those systems will max out on the monitor you are looking at.

the viper is our best selling i7 system for a reason

whilst the x6 amd rigs are very impressive, if you can afford the i7 option then it really is the way to go.

i would personally consider an SSD over a sound card as it would make a massive improvement to the overall speed of the system.

in all fairness, any of the systems you mentioned would be a great investment.

be quick, the viper is on this week only too :)

Speaking of the Viper, how does the 5970 fit inside the Antec 902 case? I tried with my Antec 902 and i had to push one of the HDD cages slightly out to make it fit. I would assume you've done some modifications or you automatically upgrade them to the Antec 1200 if they choose the 5970.

we remove the middle hard drive bay and fit the fan mount and grill on its own.

this provides a lot of airflow to the graphics card and still leaves three hard drive slots

most of our customers use maybe two drives max

maybe an SSD.

we ship the cages out with the system in case the customer ever wants to change their card/upgrade their drives etc

Not bad, so how come the AMD system doesn't come with the 5970? Does it not give enough punch like the i7's?
