Have aliens hijacked Voyager 2 spacecraft

The signal has been decoded -

Dear Friend,

I am Mr.Emory Barr, Accounts Manager, of Abbey National PLC
Bromley Rd Branch. I have an important business proposition for you.

On December 12th, 2001, a German contractor with the British Pertroleum co-orporation, United Kingdom ,Mr. Olaf Partetzke made a numbered time (Fixed) Deposit for twelve calendar months, valued at US$ 17,350,000.00 (Seventeen Million Three Hundred Hundred and fifty Thousand Dollars only) in my branch.
Upon maturity,I sent a routine notification to his forwarding address but got no reply. After a month, we sent a reminder and finally we discovered from his contract employers, the British Pertroleum co-orporation that Mr.Olaf Partetzke died from an Automobile accident further investigation,
I found out that he died without making a WILL,and all attempts to trace his next of kin was fruitless.

I therefore made further investigation and discovered that Mr. Olaf Partetzke did not declare any kin or relations in
all his official documents, including his Bank Deposit paperwork in my Bank. This sum of US$ 17,350,000.00 is still sitting in my Bank and the interest is being rolled over with the principal sum at the end of each year. No one will ever come forward to claim it. According to inheritance Laws of the United Kingdom, at the expiration of 5 (five) years, the money will revert to the ownership of the Local Government Authorities here in Wales, United Kingdom, if nobody applies to claim the fund.

Consequently, my proposal is that I will like you to stand in as the next of kin to Mr. Olaf Partetzke
so that the fruits of this old man's labor will not get into the hands of some corrupt government officials. This is simple, I will like you to provide immediately your full names and address so that the attorney will prepare the necessary documents and affidavits that will put you in place as the next of kin. We shall employ the services of an attorney for drafting and notarization of the WILL and to obtain the necessary documents and letter of probate/administration in your favor for the transfer. The money will be paid into your account for us to share in the ratio of 60% for me and 35% for you and 5% for Expenses Incurred in the course of the transaction .

There is no risk at all as all the paperwork for this transaction will be done by the attorney and with my position as the Manager with my bank will guarantees the successful execution of this transaction. If you are interested, please reply immediately to my private email
box : [email protected]

Upon your response, I shall then provide you with more details and relevant documents that will help you understand the transaction. You should observe utmost confidentiality, and rest assured that this transaction would be most profitable for both of us because I shall require your assistance to invest my share in your country.

Awaiting your urgent reply.

Thanks and regards.

isn't the drake equation basically a load of BS with nearly every stage based on assumption and guess work?

I was under the impression the drake equation was simply a good way of pointing out we don't have enough data to make any remotely intelligent guesses either way, since we only are aware of one planet that has developed intelligent life capable of (theoretically) interstellar communication and are only able to observe a vanishingly small amount of the universe (or even galaxy) anyway.

Michael Crichton's 'Sphere' is worth a read on this sort of topic.

I have always wondered, if say for example we could travel faster than light, you then travel billions of light years away from the earth over taking the light, say you then had a powerful telescope that can see detail on earth from that distance would you be able to look into the past?

Launched in 1977, Voyager 2 and its twin, Voyager 1, explored the giant planets Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune and kept on going. Nearly 33 years later, they are the most distant human-made objects.

Voyager 1 is 10.5 billion miles from Earth and in about five years is expected to pass through the heliosphere, a bubble the sun creates around the solar system, and enter interstellar space.

So it's not even outside the solar system? Damn. That's both inspiring and depressing at the same time.

Don't think it's aliens in that case :(

Yes since no matter where you look you're always seeing past events as light has a speed limit. To see things the instant they happened speed would have to travel instantly everywhere.

When you look in the mirror you're seeing a past version of yourself, albeit you only a infinitesimally small fraction of a second in the past.

yes. unsure as to detail. don't even need to travel faster than light just think - if we observed another planet billions of light years away, we would be seeing its 'past' as the light has taken billions of years to reach us.

pretty sure ftl is utterly impossible according to everything we know but I'm sure quantum mechanics probably messes with that somewhere

That's why they told the probe to only transmit system diagnostic information! They've really cracked the code but don't want the general public to decipher it

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy?

They have really, really big dishes to pick up the signals. Plus I'd imagine it helps that the signal is travelling through a vacuum.

I understand that stars we see is the old light from that star so to speak... I was more wondering if a very high power telescope just interprets that same light just in more detail, so if my extremely hypothetical situation was possible it would mean time travel, although a simple voyeuristic version.

I'm thinking how rude of the aliens to come all this way but then instead of coming the final few billion miles, to scour the edges of our solar system for a ridiculously tiny object, and reprogram to send us a message we're having difficulty understanding.

In other words, Occam's razor slices the 'aliens' explanation to pieces.

yeah I was wondering if you were merely asking about detail - I reckon you should be able to answer the question yourself with some googling...at a guess I'd say the further you get from stuff the bigger a lens or equivalent receiver of photons you need to see the same level of detail.

there's an interesting sci-fi book by Piers Anthony called Macroscope, although it isn't directly related to this topic, this just made me think of it.

I imagine it would be far beyond the realms of possibility, regardless of technological advancement, to actually look at the surface of so distant a planet but if you could then you would see events that happened there the appropriate amount of time in the past for your distance from the planet.

I doubt very much a telescope could ever perform this.

You would be able to travel out to the stars and listen to old radio broadcasts though :)

Its Aliens! I took this pic with my scope a few days ago.

Undeniable evidence.

Not another zombie. Someone's creating an army of zombie satellites. They'll be eating your brains via your TV before you know it. If you don't believe me, fast forward to 9:20...

OK, so I could be slightly wrong there, but apparently, the repair bill will be astronomical.
