re:

The fermi launch is a stark contrast to the 5870/5850 launch

As ATI were the first to go DX11 maybe that had something to do with it.
If it had been Nvidia bringing the DX11 cards out first, I guess things would have been different.

Lots of people lost patience and bought 5xxx.

These will still sell very quickly, it's a darn fast card.

Oh no question they are a faster card, but price/performance on them is bad.

I myself was holding out for the 480, but after seeing the reviews and the release price... well...

If they came down to around £350-365 then they'd be worth considering over a 5870.

Just my opinion like :p

And you're a sensible guy, but as well all know, getting the fastest PC or best gaming/folding machine doesn't usually mean best price/performance ratio!

I do agree, price is high, but everything is atm due to the exchange rate. These parts are also short in supply, which pushes up the price too. You might get one yet, just not right now!

Getting better in price. Might consider giving two of them a whirl in SLI when the prices start touching £300. Seeing I managed to get two 5870's in XF for just under £400, I'd be an idiot to give that up for a £400 single card. Still, tempting to try out the green side again. Been too long.

Wow! great price :) There not that far off the 5870 price now so this card has a better chance of competing now :)
