Project Evo "Franken-IV" forge rebuild!

I myself have had an white Evo 6 and a Sti 7. Japs can make fast cars! Looking very nice mate, love the colour of your IV. Just wondering why you went for TEIN coilovers? I have had nightmares with them in the past I wouldnt touch them with a barge pole! A few of mine burst had a nightmare trying to get TEIN to ship replacements to the UK. From what I here HSD are the way to go and are certainley cheap or KW. Your engine will be a beast am sure. Good look with the build!

Thanks bud, I have always quite liked the Teins (had basic model Teins before) so when it was time to upgrade I managed to get these Monoflex's at a brilliant price considering they are £1600 at the moment :D Maybe if I had to pay full price I would have gone a different route but from my experiences so far they are great coilovers :) Which models did you have issues with out of interest mate?

Thanks for all the nice comments, more updates to follow as things progress although plenty to go yet, I think im looking at around 6 weeks to have it all back together and ran-in ready for the track
Bit annoyed through as I should have the Engine back within 2 weeks but the Polyflex engine mount bushes have a 3-4week ETA on them :( :(

I had the superstreet model on my scooby and so has a mate. Both sets developed a leak on rear shocks so claimed on the warranties. Took around 6-8 weeks before either car was back on the road due shipping times from Japan and Tein trying to wriggle out of it. Both cars had only travelled 3-4k on them too. Very worrying, so much so I sold them and my mate is doing the same thing. Hope you have more luck and the monoflexs are twice the price so should in theory be better!

Aren't Tein's in general very firm? Thinking of Tein's on the already firm Evo makes my eyes water ;)

Ollie - thats bad news mate, never heard of that problem on Evos and I know a lot of people running the superstreets, mono's and monoflex's for years without problems, wondering if it could have been a design issue/fault on that particular model for scooby?!

Gaijin - yes they are generally quite firm but depends on what model you go for to what poundage springs you get, the monoflex's have really high poundage springs and I can barely bounce the car with the dampers set to damping click 8 out of 16!

Couple more pics that were sat on my phone - some conduit to re-cover looms, Mikalor clamps for boost piping and some cable/pipe clamps to neaten things up a bit :)

Bought a quick-shift kit and have now got my rebuilt gearbox back complete with new bearings & synchros :D

Could very well be a scooby specific week point or a bad batch! I think the TEINs are very good otherwise considering their cost. I take it your car is gonna be a full on track car after these mods?

Scoobys are known for eating the rear suspension. On the newer ones anyways!

Cool thread - I shall be watching this with interest, I love Evos.

Not had chance to do that much recently but have fitted the new Whiteline front ARB (Anti Roll Bar) which was a git to fit!

Just waiting to get my engine back (next week hopefully) and the engine mounts from Powerflex but theres a 3 week lead time on them :( Soon as I have them through its time for everything to start going back together and the fun begins! :D

Right update time, not done huge amounts but list of done work includes:

  • Engine now forged and back from MAD
  • Gearbox fully rebuilt with new bearings & synchro
  • Front Whiteline ARB fitted with standard droplinks
  • Engine loom stripped back and re-wrapped
  • Starter/Alternator loom stripped back and re-wrapped
  • Air-con removed

Since I got the engine back I've painted the block and re-fitted the cambelt covers etc back on, removed oil pump blanking plugs and fitted some 3/8 - 1/8 NPT adaptors ready for the oil pressure & temp gauges.
Literally just waiting for the polyflex engine mounts to arrive (have 4-week lead time) then I can get it all fitted back together, hoping they will turn up this week and will attempt the re-fit next weekend :naughty:

A few pics nothing special though:

Without sounding rude who are you mate? lol I can remember everything you mentioned but cant put a name/face to your login!

And yeah the good old days with the car PC & the GSi Turbo, soon going to build a new car-pc in my mk4 golf but the Evo project is first! Yeah can remember American pie on projector (projector was mine btw not Gav's ;)) shame the Evo boys don't do cool things like MIG used to with the camping etc, ah well all the track days make up for it! :D

Wish my car was this awesome :(

Cheers, thanks mate :)

Hoping to get it all put back together in the next couple of weeks, just need my damm polyflex engine mounts to hurry up!
