or as above 2 of these: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-216-SP&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1515

If you cant get the extra cash then this is your only option brand new that is:

I think that will give you the same performance as your current cards im sure i will be corrected if im wrong:)

Edit:

maybe 2 of these: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-020-C3&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1402

Im not sure how they compare to 2 x zotac 9800gtx+ mind, but im guessing it would be atleast on par .
The 250s will have double the Vram also

Also what would i get for a 9800gtx+ on ebay ? i see a zotac 9800gtx+ sell for 80 pound recently , thought that was way to high. what sensible price is one worth?

You can get a GTX 470 for £260, not much more than the cheapest 5850, if you want to stick with Nvidia that's the path to take.

On the bay, it can be random luck what you will make, but on average expect to make £60-70 and fees on top.

so at minumum i could probrably get around 100 pound for 2 . that would give me 300 pound . i have to sell them first and use my old 7800gtx back up .

i like the sound of a 470 , but the heat and noise puts me off . will be a tough decision

i have a 470 if you have a half decent case with good airflow temperatures will be ok.

As for noise if the fan is set at 60% its not too bad and that should be fine for gaming and for temps

The 5850 is also a very good card and will run a fair bit cooler and use less power.

The 5850 and 470 are very similar in performance except the 470 will provide Physx and Cuda

If i was in your shoes i would be looking at those 2 cards and nothing else

You will get £100 for both your GTXs

Big improvement
Wouldn't go that far. If not counting the 512MB ram limitation, comparing 9800GTX+SLI to 5850 is pretty much like comparing crossfire 4850 to crossfire 4870 (around same speed as 5850).

Assuming he can sell his 9800GTX+ for £50 each, he's still need to pay £130-£150 extra in order to get a 5850. So in a way, if looking at it purely from performance's stand point, the question would be like considering if it is worth upgrading from crossfire 4850 to crossfire 4870 at the cost of £130-£150. 1GB ram graphic card would nice, but not a necessity if only gaming at 1680x1050 or below.

Another option just grab some aftermarket coolers for the 9800GTX+ such as the Akasa Vortexx NEO VGA cooler
Have to check if it would fit the Zotac 9800GTX+ though, as this cooler is known to be not compatable with some cards with non reference PCB.
