Folding Motherboard?

Hi guys,

I was wondering what people might recommend for a folding motherboard that needs to take an i7 core along with 4 8800GT graphics cards. My initial thought was the UD3R that I use in my gaming rig (see sig), but then I considered the slots might be slightly too close together for heat if this is going to be a folding setup.

I was wondering what other people used for i7 mobo rigs?

I did look at the thread and think - great idea a motherboard that can be packed really small.

Though I have no idea what folding is and have only just found out from using google. "protein folding, misfolding, and related diseases" WFT?!

Is that why so many people have i7 rigs with 16gb ram, so they can help cure Alzheimer's, Parkinsons and Cancer? Sounds like a worthy project, failing that i'm sure Crysis runs great!

Yes mate, you've got it spot on. Basically people like me (better people, mind you!) do this for a hobby. We basically build machines that help Stanford University in their efforts to find cures for various diseases.

The reason I'm looking for a board with 4 slots is that folding can use a single GPU to run a single client which works on a particular work unit. If you have multiple GPUs, you can assign each GPU to a work unit. Couple that with a working client that actually uses as many cores in a CPU as you throw at it, and you can see where I'm getting with using an i7 mobo with 4 slots for GPUs :)

I wish! :D

-VK-, do ASUS fancy sponsoring the build? I've already got some sponsorship from one company for cooling the whole thing but the motherboard is eluding me? Perhaps some GPUs too? ;) hehe. A nice 4-slot mobo for an i7 would go down nicely. I'm aiming to end up creating a project log on a couple of sites, plus a magazine feature once the item is finished (I'll be designing the case, etc for it aswell).

Ph4lanx have you thought of watercooling your system.
this should keep your hardware runing for longer as folding stresses gpus big style, and heat seems to kill them off.
Im currently in the process of rebuilding my system due to losing yet another 2 video cards through folding.
i do use watercooling but up till now only on my cpu i will be adding my working 8800gt to the loop
im just hoping i can salvage my other 2 video cards to get my folding rig backup and running.
By using watercooling you would not have to worry about heat killing off your cards with them being close proximeaty to each other.

You can always get PCI-E flexi risers if you want to space them out a bit, and the case has enough expansion slots. That way you can space them out a bit more to get more air around them.

Yeah I'm not worried about the space in terms of cooling, as it's going to be water-cooled. I'm more worried about PHYSICAL space. Still looking atm for a good board.
