***HTC Magic Thread***

I'm going to wait and see how the whole Vodafone contract cancellation fiasco pans out before I consider rooting, I might end up being able to just walk into a shop and get a new phone with the latest FW on it anyway if I manage to cancel.
If that falls through tho, I'll no doubt cave and start to delve into the murky world of rooting!

What contract cancellation fiasco?

What contract cancellation fiasco?
Vodafone are changing the 500MB FUP from a soft limit to a hard limit and charging anyone who goes over 500MB at all, not just on a regular basis. Theoretically on a legal basis this is a change of contract and because Vodafone want the charging to start on June 1st and haven't really made an official announcement, such as letters to each person on their contracts, apart from some posts on their eForum a lot of Vodafone Pay Monthly users consider this a break in the terms of the contract that Vodafone to give 30 days notice of a change in terms. So Vodafone then denied it was a change in terms of contracts with less than 30 days notice and people said it was.

See here for the full story. I'm waiting to see what happens and will get a PAC for my number and get an HTC Desire on T-Mobile from Mobile Phones Direct if Vodafone accept they've changed the terms of the contract without enough notice and let people cancel their contracts.

Me too, best thing to do I think, and T-mobile have some pretty reasonable contracts going round at the moment I have to say!

Yep. On Mobile Phones Direct its possible to get the Desire on a £25 a month contract with no fee for the phone itself. If I can get this deal I'd save £10 a month, albeit I'd lose some free minutes and texts but I'd still have plenty on the T-Mobile deal I reckon. :)

This is niggling at me now...
If I choose to root to the latest cyanogen rom from my 1.6 Magic, how should/might it affect the following:

Battery life
General speed of the UI
Compatibility of my current apps

Also, how easy is it to 'roll back' to the default firmware, in case I want to sell the phone on?

All the apps are still fully compatible.

It's a lot fast I've found.

I haven't noticed any decrease in battery life since I've done mine and I've been using my phone more for news and what not since flashing.

No idea about rolling back to the stock firmware, don't see the point though most people would probably want it with a custom ROM on any way as they are a lot better than the stock firmware.

:)

So I rooted my phone, installed the latest cyanogen and partitioned my SD card.
It certainly seems to be running more snappily, but I do have a couple of problems; My Genesoid app doesn't work properly anymore, and when my alarm went off this morning it only vibrated and didn't make any noise from the loudspeaker.
Also, before I rooted TasKiller used to show around 40mb free memory when all apps were killed, but now it only shows about 30?!

Any suggestions?

There was mention of the Market app not working on the cyanogen forums earlier, not sure what/if the resolution was...

I just put on the stable version (only noticed it was even a work in progress at the weekend, when the stable version was 'a few days away' so didn't bother with test 6 :p)

Everything seems to work fine atm, give it a good play over the next few days but it seems quick, and using launcherpro beta which is quite shiny :p
