Stealership service debacle! Oil service nightmare!

so!!! I'm currently sat at the side of the road now awaiting BMW emergency assist, (aka some local provisioned breakdown firm)' as the car smoked so badly at tick over, revs went nuts, i hit the stop start button and then she never started again, just cranked. I had hoped the engine had gone into some sort of protection mode until i saw the pool of oil emerging from underneath the car. Basically looks like the bottom end has now let go!!!

This is going to get interesting!!

Funnily enough, iDrive now says the oil level is too low!!!! Good job i have photos!

You decided to drive it again after it had already died? Not the best idea surely!?

This is terrible but honestly does not surprise me at all.

As above. Not a wise move at all. I'm sure the garage (if you can call them that) will do all they can to get out of paying for anything.

should have left it outside your house and not driven it again. Hope this ends well for you but this may end up costing you lots.

Its likely the damage was already done the first time you drove it HOWEVER if i was you, i wouldnt be giving the "dealer" any excuse to get out of the claim for a potentially new engine by telling them you continued to drive it.

Oh jesus that's terrible!

Should the idrive not alert you to any issues when you start the car?

Sounds like it's going to need a fair bit of work but I'd be worried about the long term damage that might have been done

overfilled oil can/will cause-

damage to cat
damage to lambda
damage to particulate filter
shock damage to big end bearings
excessive crank case pressure
damage to oil filter
oil pump hydro-lock
displaced main crank oil seals
which in turn contaminate the clutch plate.

All of this BMW will now say is your fault for knowingly driving with a defect, all they will probably offer is a free oil and filter change to cover their original mistake.

You knowingly drove the vehicle in a defective state, why? I can see the ball for this one landing firmly back in your court.....

Well this is odd, I posted that from my phone not long after I took the dipstick reading. Stupid Nokia E72, glad I'm ditching it It's not been driven anywhere since I got home and the car was at the side of the road.

Is it likely that the local dealer service manager will be in today? I'm guessing not

I pulled up outside home and rang BMW EA. They are delvering a car to me now but as I waited, I pulled up the iDrive menu to find this:.

So, you pulled up outside your house and phoned BMW Assist. Then whilst you were waiting, outside your own house, you went into the iDrive menu.

This has occured after your first post - you make reference to what iDrive NOW says, after the first reading, taken outside your house. So you MUST have driven it AFTER the first post was made and AFTER you posted on here explaining you knew the car was overfilled with oil.

This is of course a monumentally stupid thing to do, so stupid infact BMW can now quite easily argue that although they may be liable for the initial damage, you knowingly drove it in an unservicable state and wrecked the engnie.

This makes it your bill to pick up.

You then watch everyone point out how utterly, utterly daft you have been.

Then you post this:

Seriously, what? If its not been driven anywhere since you got home how has it now ended up at the side of the road with a pool of oil in it AFTER you first got home and first telephoned BMW Assist? Remember, you told us you got home THEN called BMW Assist and checked the oil level for the first time AFTER calling them.

What IS going on here?

There is absolutely no way you made that post from your phone before you discovered the car was overfilled with oil, as it wouldnt have been a reply in an existing thread!

You need to clarify things because at the moment it looks like major backpedalling after finding out you've been very silly :p

I'm confused though, it was still running at 19:00 but 4 hours later you started it again or what?

EDIT: what fox said - I'm calling shenanigans/damage limitation. ;)

OcUK investigation machine has gone into overdrive.

How about waiting for him to come back and give you an update before jumping to the conclusion that an intelligent chap drove the car again.

p.s should have bought an a6.

He is prob there now going ballistic, I would be.

I would be leaving with the best pooled car they have access too for my trouble. Most probably something that the roof goes down with the weather we are having :p.

We'll never know what really happened as he's plenty of time to get his story straight now :)

OP: I generally refuse to let some complete tit with 2 F's in GCSE art and history to fix my car for £50 an hour.

Couldn't you have just serviced it yourself and kept the receipts as proof?
£380 what seems to be merely an oil change makes me think do it yourself and take the value drop on the car for no FSH.
