Im after the best rated HOMM type game.
Ive only played HOMM4 and was wondering what other people have played.
Ive seen

Heroes of Might and Magic V
Disciples
King's Bounty: The Legend

They are all failry cheap but id like to get my teeth into the best.
Anyone got an idea?
 
Only played HoMMV and Kings Bounty Armoured Princess (not bothered with Legend yet).

HoMMV is just insanely hard... i just gave up a few missions in when i was expected to conquer some of the elves, build up an army and hold off a hero that would randomly appear with 10x more units than i could ever hope to achieve. Dunno how it compares to HoMMIV so maybe i'm just not used to it.

KB:AP is great fun, still been getting to grips with it and it lets you play at your own pace unlike HoMMV. You are *guaranteed* to never have the same experience twice, the units available, the items available, the loot, the order you get runes on level up, for the most part is randomly generated.
 
with HoMMV make sure u have the latest patch, as there was a bug in the previous version where the AI could build up massive armies
 
HOMM2 and 3 :p

Seriously though, they're a lot better gameplay-wise. :) If you get the complete versions, the campaigns on hardest difficulty will keep you busy a while, nevermind online or skirmish style play.

3DO collapsed pretty much because HOMM4 did poorly...
 
For something a bit different try Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic, or even the Fall from Heaven 2 mod for Civ4.

Otherwise HOMM2 or the new Tribes of the East standalone for HOMM5 are probably your best bets.

4 was awful in comparison. The king's bounty series are identical to the battles in HOMM, but without the strategy / building bit to back it up. I got bored really quickly. Age of Wonders isn't bad, a little harder to get into I found.
 
OMG cant believe i forgot about these games, i had the third one and the hours i lost to that game. So whats the latest one like, is it worth getting?

So after a bit of research:
3 is the best one
4 was bad
5 is just as good as 3 but of course a lot prettier

Well ive just bought the following:
HOMM3 and 4 Complete double pack £5
HOMM5 and expansions on steam

Im more excited about playing 3 again, it also comes with its expansions which i never had:) Probably wont even touch 4 as it came with 3.

Yes.

As a rabid fan of HOMM2 and HOMM3, 5 is great, especially with all the expansions.

Also, both King's Bounty games are great and offer some variation to the normal HOMM experience.
