So first off am I cheap skate, and skint at the moment.

I have just acquired a double bed, for giving a helping hand.

Now a mate works in a bed shop, and I can use his discount card. He has a mattress at £80 and a memory foam one at £110.

Now for some reason I dont like the idea of getting stuck in the bed I like moving about (fidget a lot during my sleep too) are they as comfy as they say? Or avoid at such a cheap price.

O its one of those vacuum backed jobbies.

Personal preference. Mattresses are difficult to buy. What is comfrtable in the shop may be agonising over the course of a night.
You pay your money and take your chance. I'd not consider a cheap memory foam mattress personally.
I have a £600 pocketsprung+memory foam mattress on our spare bed as it was supremely comfortable in the shop but was back breaking within a few nights.

oh my god what a coincidence, i was JUST about to make a "spec me a mattress" thread..

though the response in this thread makes things difficult, lately i've been getting quite a bad back when i wake up, i need to improve it, current mattress is only about 4-5 years old but i really don't like it!

I assume for a skinny person like myself with a bad back a firm one would be best bet rather than soft or medium?

4-5yrs to discover you don't like your mattress ?

Or if you read lately he has been getting a bad back.

To be honest with me, for the past year I have lived on a foam plastic mattress so any kind will be a massive upgrade :)

He doesn't specify that his bad back is the reason he doesn't like it

It was my missus mattress at her dads house for 2-3 years, which i only slept on, on and off, over the course of 2 years, i've only been sleeping on it full time for 2 years and only in the past 6 months i've been getting a bad back

Woke up this morning feeling like someone had stabbed me in the spine, hence my willingness to buy a new one now :)

That and i've never found it THAT comfy, though not bad enough to complain about until now

I bought a memory foam mattress last year and haven't regretted it. Even with the heat over the last week I haven't noticed this issue people say about them where you get extra hot (though mine came with some fancy cover that is meant to eliminate that issue).

I don't like the memory foam ones personally, too hot during the summer and you kinda sink into them. I ended up getting a pocket sprung mattress with latex foam instead, it breathes so you don't get too hot (but keeps it's heat for a good 15 mins if I have to get out of bed for something). Not cheap tho, cost me £500, most comfy bed I've ever slept on!

Pocket spring is what i've been looking at, i certainly can't afford £500 though :( i think £300 would be my maximum, with £200 prefered

Was thinking about making a thread like this teh other day. decided not to.
I don't like memory foam.

So went for a 1000 pocket sprung, double edged, medium/firm mattress. For only £149. Hasn't arrived yet though.

It really comes down to how you sleep (side, front or back) but most people ought to be sleeping on a softer mattress than they think they should be.

If you've got back problems and you sleep on your side or back, you ought to be looking at a soft or medium mattress as this allows your body to 'sink' into the mattress and will keep your spine straight. However, very few companies actually market their mattresses as 'soft' as it tends to make people think the wrong thing - you really need to get out there and get testing.

Avoid memory foam like the plague as it pushes back on your body and will generally cause more problems than it will solve. And a memory foam topper is barely worth the money. Ideally you want to be looking at either a soft/medium-soft mattress in either latext or pocket-sprung with a latex topper.

If you can afford it, take a look at Jensen. Your back will thank you for it.
