Apple is now bigger than Microsoft

majority of games at an acceptable frame rate and at a cost of less than your first car.

That and running all that old crap they've been buying for windows os's over the years.

Not going to happen for the average customer.

I have 233 poeple on my database I have visited over the last 24 months..

of those 233

maybe 10 were into gaming

a majority of people want internet, email, picture and music storage...

there were maybe a handful using business apps that would not run on a mac..

a mac would better suite most poeple however I DONT WANT THIS TO HAPPEN, macs jsut dont go wrong enough a 4 year old mac is likley to be about as fast as the day it was brought, they dont get hammered with virus' and they are way too easy to restore.

I know if everyone started using a mac there would be more virus' but I think (appart from the price) they would be a good bet for most users..

as a mac user i really wonder how people in buisness cope with office for mac. its absolutely terribly horrible !

i find myself having to go into uni to use a 5yr old windows xp pc just to make a document! truly shocking

The missus has a mac book pro, its a great piece of kit and serves its purpose, you do however get the idea its targeted for work professional's and intended for use in a work capacity, ill be hounest the mbp is waisted on the missus and as a general web explorer and facebook updater its an overpriced aluminum box and that's why Microsoft will always hold there monopoly, they are as mentioned earlier pretty much the standard, they don't hold a premium like apple hardware and so are in the public domain the better option for most consumers, this translates over to business, less training in general is needed as its widely used at home and there fore presents itself as the better option.

Microsoft have the better business model, they don't have to charge a massive premium for there products over market alternatives, they partner and resale to a much larger range of company's in the form of computer/laptop manufacturers because there product is pretty much the standard for public use.

If apple can conquer the average user with more value for money products then they will outgrow M$ but until then there phones and ipods are the most mainstream products they have and even now you notice interest waning, maybe the iphone 4G will spark fresh interest but tbh im expecting the same product in a new box, but we will see.

China, India, any emerging economies. If you were a citizen of these countries what would you do, buy a Microsoft licensed OS or just download Linux for free off the net.

Neither, they pirate Windows for free. Even MS themselves have said that they'd rather have people use pirated copies of their operating system than a free alternative.

windows xp is pretty damn good I must confess. I'm on 7, but I HATE the search feature. The search in XP was the best ever, so user friendly :D

What's so user-friendly about something that takes far more steps to get to than the Vista/7 equivalent? It's rubbish.

Im sorry but how exactly is apple bigger than microsoft?

The only reason Apple profits are close(ish) to microsoft is because of there high profit on each item they sell.

And all that means is Apple fans get ripped off more =\ So im happy for you Apple fans ;)

Apple are a one trick pony, in that they have the media market, outside of that there is little place for a mac.
All the hyper around the ibrand will eventually die out and unless they have something exceptionally good to replace it with people will just get bored and move onto the next big thing. I can see things getting very hard for Apple to move away from the ibrand and prove they are more than just a gimmick. Already the Android is catching the iphone exceptionally quick.

MS, for all there failings are huge beyond what the average user will ever see, they have fingers in pretty much every pie out there.
Not one for innovation but they don't need to, there big enough to step back let someone else risk the initial investment, then they can either design there own or buy the company up. As they have many a time before.

However the one to watch for is Google!

This is of course as opposed to the Unix philosophy of a "monolithic" kernel. Whereby the kernel's responsibilities consists of pretty much everything. If a Unix kernel developer could have the kernel make sliced toast, he would chunk it in there for good measure. He wouldn't care that the toaster trips out the circuit breaker every once in a while...

There is a fantastic argument/discussion between Andrew Tanenbaum (writer of Minix, a UNIX like micro kernel operating system that was popularly used to teach students about operating systems) and Linus Torvalds (writer of Linux) about microkernels versus monolithic kernels. :D

Android sales beat iPhone sales in Q1 in US apparently.

This isnt the original source I read it from but don't have time to search for it.

Im sure next month when the new iphone is released figures will be interesting. When is the next big android release? MS also have WP7 on the horison.

WinMo doesnt seem to be doing very well at the moment, but obviously this is not representative of the three companies.

The way I see it is that yes the revenues of MS and Apple may be very close now but their products are very different.

Microsoft's is primarily a software company that makes a few pieces of hardware. Apple is primarily a hardware company that also sells an OS.

MS is dominant in the enterprise sector and that won't change anytime soon as it would be a logistical nightmare to transition thousands of users from one completely different OS to another. Also Windows based PCs are cheaper, the overwhelming majority of consumers shop on a limited budget and Apple computers usually don't fit into this budget.

Because a lot of Apple's revenue comes from handheld devices they have to work much harder to stay on the ball as that market moves much faster and competition is fierce.

Based on those things I'd say MS is in a safer and more stable market segment than Apple and would be a safer investment! Note that I didn't say better investment!

majority of it is probably iphones and ipads though something which seem to have lost a lot of novelty value even amongst hardcore iDIOTS
Rubbish, the iphone is probably the best phone i've ever owned.
Theres a reason so many people have them, they are that good.

Microsoft should just give up in the mobile device game because they just don't cut the mustard, Apple rape the mustard and kill it's children.

MS is mostly software based althrough they do have some hardware (XBOX) as for the zune I m not sure if mircosoft actually makes that.

Apple have their reach pretty much everyware, mostly in portable media, with the IPODs and stuff

for me apple are not focused enough, and they are a fashion item, well they are in terms of PCs and MP3/PMPs

as for the iphone, its a great gadget but it does have its flaws which is why I have a sony.

one of which is that poor 2 meg camera, for a £400 phone...come on

So to summarise, this thread is full of wrong statements and then corrections.

Apple aren't bigger than Microsoft
Windows is no longer based upon DOS
Windows isn't less stable than Mac OS, unless hearsay is taken into account
Your shouldn't be used to mean you are, it's you're. (that's my correction added to this thread)

Why do people find it interesting to criticise Microsoft? I had a conversation with a Professor the other day and he fit the stereotypical nerd persona. He even pretty much laughed through his top top lip. Anyway, he was adamant about linux being faster than windows, I didn't respond as it would have been the most dull conversation possible but it did make me realise something. A lot of people who dismiss Microsoft products and make them out to be inferior usually fail to give reasons why.

For example, why is Linux faster? why is dos worse than unix?

Theres a reason so many people have them, easy to use.

fixed :)
No im not saying iphone users are idiots.
People like phones that are cool and functional these days, a lot of these users dont care about extra features or specs and arent bothered by the **** camera and silly upgrades apple tack on and hold back in order to introduce a significantly more expensive model a year down the line that competition had introduced a year before!

Don't see how they're a fashion item, you buy the machine best suited to the job.

PC fanboys do shoot themselves in the foot, they won't face facts the IPOD is easily the cornerstone of good MP3 players.
It's light, quick, it has a simple easy to use interface, plenty of storage, it's well priced and surprisingly durable.

Pc's have their uses as do macs.

Price isn't an issue, I'm a heavy user so it was free on contract, the upgrades don't matter to me, the 3GS is noticably faster than the 3G though and video capability is also useful.

It's fast, has all the apps I need, decent satnav for one (The one on my N95 was rubbish), a reasonable amount of storage (Enough to hold a few weeks worth of music before I get bored). It's a good phone, only thing I can say I don't like is you can't swap out the battery.

Blackberry users, now they're the pretentious ones. Usually work a low end office job but buy a blackberry to feel more important.

Of course they are a fashion item!

I know large amounts of people with an iphone, specifically girls who have no idea about the capabilities and uses for a smart phone, and would be just as well off with a £10 jobby from tesco.

Yet they are paying £400 or crazy tarrif prices and not using any of the benefits apart from to refer to their mobiles as iPhones at every given moment.

They also take every opportunity to try and tell me their phones are better than my HD2. This doesn't last long though when I show them I have freeview, iplayer, 4od etc etc, ps1 emulators, megadrive and snes emulators, warcraft 2, pc remote, turn by turn gps, a torch, a flash, a good camera. They either shut up very quickly or spout something about angry birds or flight control game.
