I'm thinking of playing an MMORPG but I would prefer to try something new other than WoW.

Guildwars I don't really like because of the lack of a proper world. Just seems like nothing has come along and really moved people on from WoW?

The only other i know of is Aion then, not really played anyhting other than WoW but friends have played Aion and EVE and they seemed to like them.

There is a new OCUK kinship on one of the LOTRO servers and they look like they are having a great time, it is a good game more relaxed than most and if you got involved with the kinship they would give you a great introduction to it.

I would say give that a shot. Worth doing the free trial atleast.

Yeah, it's all good fun in the Kinship. Deadbeat is a little 'Rapey' though.

Downloading LOTRO now.

What's Warhammer Online like?

The video reviews for Warhammer make it look a lot more chaotic and fun. LOTRO looks a bit bland on the videos?

Wow alternative?

Nothing.

There is not one other MMO which is even on-par with WoW. There are titles which might satisfy nit pick areas of the "habit" but nothing will fully replace it.

A friend is playing Aion, all the others he started with quit, but he loves it for PVP.

I'm going back and forth on wow, I don't play it much at the moment... but it's good now and then as you can be pretty casual. AOC I tried and thought it was a bit meh, but I ain't played it in ages. It had massive potential, but it was ruined by no voice acting and lack of polish later on.

I think like the other post said there just isn't anything on par with WoW.

I've tried both Warhammer and Aion and to be honest they were both pretty terrible in their own way.

Warhammer I found an excellent game pre final level, but end game was utter cack. It was also quite possibly the buggiest game I've ever played. I used to dread patch days as 9 times out of 10 the developers would have replaced a minor bug with an even greater bug. In the end a patch got released which made my fps drop from 60fps to 2fps in certain locations along with several guildmates, we all transferred over to Aion.

Aion was a very pretty game and I did really enjoy a lot of the aspects of the crafting system. Unfortunately being a ported Korean game it was a grind fest. The developers did include questing in the EU/US version, designed to minimize grinding. However these quests were dull, boring and repititive, not much different to pure grinding. Having said all that, it was a very polished game (it had already been out for a year + in korea) so most bugs were ironed out. PVP was also pretty fun but instances and dungeons were just a dull grind again.

My guild are now playing Global Agenda which is supposedly an FPS mixed in an MMO world. I played for 4hrs and hated it but the rest of my mates still enjoy it. Might be worth a look but it's certainly a totally different game to WoW.

I can't really comment on the other games listed as I've not returned to WoW, after a 2 year abscense. I hear rumours of a Warhammer 40k MMO in development which I think might be pretty good. I've also heard a lot of people getting excited over the new Star Wars MMO which is due to be released later this year I believe. But in a nutshell I doubt you'll find anything out there at the moment that will replace the WoW void.

I think so long as you accept this basic fact, WoW is the best, but then also accept that just because the other games aren't best, they can still be absolutely great.

Especially with the right group of people. Even Anarchy Online is still a right laugh with the right friends.

I'd try the demos, check out Lord of the Rings, try Warhammer Online, try and get an Aion demo also Everquest 2 is even worth a try of the demo.

See if any of them grip you in that special way MMO's do.

I've played WoW and I just want something different really.

I'll try LOTRO first and maybe Warhammer after that (I like the look of warhammer quite a lot, but it doesn't mean it plays well)

WoW is probably only the best if that happened to be the first MMO that got you hooked.

I still think Asheron's Call is the best and I'm sure loads more think that Ultima Online rocks balls...

I've played warhammer, lotro and wow with full accounts.

and the order i put them based on how much i liked the game.

Warhammer > LOTRO > WOW

but strangely

i play WOW > LOTRO > Warhammer (demoted to unlimited free trial now)

probably because Wow has a better balance of everything, lotro is a very solid middle ground. Then there are times with warhammer when the pvp gets going, your in a good group and it's immense. Then sadly there are other times when you'll login, not much is happening and be bored. Like you say the videos look great, and at times it is great but it always feels like it's lacking something extra.

good luck with whatever you choose!

Aion manages to hold my attention at the moment. New patch comes on early June which should make it a bit less 'grindy', amongst other improvements
