I'm lucky in Bristol that there are several bars which are good fun in bar-pseudo-club type way without having become overrun with chavs - Start the Bus, Big Chill Bar, etc - BUT what's good in Liverpool?

My friend who's lived there for years that I'm off to visit this weekend even struggles to find places that are just good and fun places to be at night, now, saying it may be best just to stick to pubs.

Ideas, folks?

Cheers!

^^ Ever so funny/original, you probably haven't ventured north of Birmingham in the past ten years, tell me why was Liverpool voted fifth in the top UK destinations on tripadvisor (just after London) if it's ever so bad?

Anyway:

Restaurants wise, check out the offering in the Albert Dock, PanAm is nice. If you really want somewhere impressive to eat, try Panoramic -http://www.panoramicliverpool.com/ which is the heighest restaurant in Britain.

In terms of places to go at Night, it depends what you're looking for really, hardman street & hope street area has some decent pubs/clubs like bumper and magnet and I tend to prefer it to the more chavvy concert square.

In terms of other things to do the everyman and unity theaters are great smaller theaters that usually have good stuff on, also be sure to visit the Tate in the Albert Dock aswell as the International Slavery Museum, Beatles Story and other galleries and museums such at the Bluecoat. :)

Probably find more stuff on here: www.visitliverpool.com

Before flippantly wiping out two of the UKs major cities (number 3 and 4 according to the technical measures and 2 and 4 according to other less.. official measures), perhaps those who are derisory might want to visit these places a few times with locals and actually see the sights, experience the people, and don't just go to the tourist spots.

I have been to London many times, if I go to the tourist areas I absolutely can't stand the place, when I go and visit my native friends and they take me out, I have a great time.

Manchester and Liverpool are both the same. They are culturally and historically very rich cities and while I recognise mancs and scousers have a reputation for being a bit rough, (and lets face it they aren't exactly the nicest of accents when they're really thick) , I have lived in Manchester city centre for 4 years now, and quite literally havent had a single jot of trouble. I am fully aware of areas I could go and it would be hell, but I simply avoid them (printworks...), as I now do in London.

Liverpool is really nice too, a really good example of how to modernise a city without losing sight of its past. Manchester isn't so great at that some of the time.

I really don't see how simply stating you hate 2 huge cities is in anyway constructive.

WRT. to Liverpool and going out, sorry I can't be of much help, it's been ages since I've been out around there for a night (says he of the non-constructive criticism!)

Had a very messy one in 'The Crown' just outside Lime Street, good place to start a night out as its £1.90 a pint :)

I'm manc through n through but Liverpool is a class city, hate the residents though :D

LOL, my boss used to go there for "business lunches", What a guy! :D

They would write out a receipt for your drinks and strips, and it looked for all intensive purposes like a lunch / meal. Tremendous for anyone who can claim a lunch or expenses :)

Cumberland Inn i believe it was!
