Nokia N900

I decided to to sell my n900 and play with the desire for a bit untill a new meego device comes out. listed it on maemo forums with a video demo'ing some of the apps installed

I'm downloading this now. It's a bit annoying that i have to disable all other catalogues to do it though. Always get a message saying that there isn't enough space left where it wants to download it too.

Not looked at the list properly, but there is a lot there. Hopefully this will fall in there somewhere.

Even though I've just got a Desire, I've not sold my N900 yet so I'll have a look and see if any improvements were made. The phone should be a bit faster, but there's no full portrait support as far as I can tell from the notes, which is the main thing a lot of people were hoping for :p

Update:

First impressions are that the phone is indeed a tiny bit faster, which is fairly nice. The portrait mode browsing is improved somewhat and now has buttons at the bottom, which again, makes it a bit nicer.

More stuff on Ovi is good, and I hope for the sake of the future N900 owners that they keep adding some apps and such to it when Meego is out, and it can hopefully work on Maemo, just like Android apps work on nearly all Android phones.

There needed to be more, but it's better than nothing :p

Just upgraded my phone and it seems to be more responsive than before. Allowing to rearrange the icons is something I wanted from the start.

It took me over 3 hours to update the phone though.

Does the n900 have a call register ??
(I.E Log of missed calls,Received calls,Dialled numbers,with time & date )

As i read something in a review lastnight about the n900 having no call register or a very limited one..

What's all this talk about Nokia abandoning the phone? I know they've done this deal with intel to merge their mobile platforms into a single platform (MeeGo) but have they actually said that they aren't going to support MeeGo on the N900?

All the footage I've seen of MeeGo they've been using the N900 as the testbed.

As for the call log the only complaint I've seen is that it doesn't have separate tabs for dialled/received/missed but instead displays them in a single event log style display. I'm fine with this, quite like it actually.

I took a picture for you, using the terrible camera on my work phone.

Nokia have said that MeeGo isn't going to be supported on the N900, it has been discussed to death on the Maemo forums and quite a lot of people are upset with Nokia, but it's a Maemo phone, not a MeeGo one.

That said, it wouldn't be surprised if Dev's managed to get MeeGo working on the N900!

Well my PDAir case and windscreen mount arrived today from Hong Kong. Initial impressions...

The case itself feels solid and like a quality product, it comes in a nice presentation box with a removeable belt clip attachment.

The case is hinged along the bottom edge. I can see why they've done it, because the top is mostly open but it's a little annoying as it hangs down. The case must be open if you wish to slide the screen up, the phone is still held securely in the case even when it is open.

The belt clip attachment itself is a little annoying as it protrudes by about 1CM and makes it a little awkward to hold, it also protrudues about 2mm too far to line up with the little stand so the phone wobbles while typing or touching the screen. It's an improvement on just the camera stand which makes the phone fall over when you touch the screen. You could probably file the edge of the belt clip to a little flat angle and make it into a very good stand.

The belt clip supplied with the case is incompatible with the windscreen mount. The windscreen mount comes with a special octagonal one. I'm guessing this is to hold the phone stably. It seems to hold it fairly well though I have not tried it in a car yet.

Digression but today I also had a decent car audio install done, and sadly it's shown up just how crap the analogue output on the N900 is. I'm going to stick to burning MP3 CDs until I get some head unit that can use USB mass storage.

With careful positioning of the windscreen mount it may well be possible to use this for recording video while driving, you have to bend it to the extreme right of the phone though, at which point it may not be stable enough for filming. If you can handle having the suction cup in view on the edge of the screen, filming should be fine. Just need an app now that does a continuous loop style recording, discarding footage over 10 minutes old and providing a "that **** just pulled in front of me and slammed on the brakes" button to archive the footage to a safe location.

I took some pictures, please excuse the poor quality but I was using the works Nokia 6303 which has a terrible camera.

It's an option but the amp install today has paved the way for me to install my old Car PC into the car.

While the N900 is more powerful than my 5 year old Via EPIA-M10000, you're not going to beat a 5 meter USB lead running to a Terratec Aureon USB soundcard mounted right next to the amp and hooked up with 50cm phono leads.

I've just got back from filming a run in both day and night modes. It's a feasibility test to see if it's worth looking into writing a "black box" application that keeps log of the last 10 minutes GPS, accelerometer and video data. I'll be uploading the unedited footage onto youtube in a bit.

E: In the meantime here's some LOLtastic shots that show I really need to fix the vibration issue with the PDAir mount

Night mode:

Day mode:

Almost stopped so as to reduce vibration

I know what you mean there..
As i myself use an 8GB ipod nano connected to my car stereo by USB..

Have you tried hooking up the N900 by USB? Can radios typically handle it even with all the other crap that's likely to collect on the 32GB flash. Can they deal with it showing up as two devices?

Fixed the vibration issue with the PDAir mount using an innovative and inexpensive vibration dampening product:

Now that that's sorted, you can get a decent recording:

I've not seen anything about MeeGo running on the N900 yet.

Hang on, looks like 1.0 can be put on the N900? Still got mine so I can try it if you want :p
