Deaths as Israeli forces storm Gaza aid ship

Soldiers attacked the ship, people on the ship defended themselves. Good on them.

Israel being a bully boy (again) and being stood up to for once. About time too - although no doubt the Israeli media will come out and call the protesters "Anti-Semites" for their actions. Typical of the Israeli's really - such a self important bunch that they have to invent a phrase (anti-semite) to describe when people don't like them, where as the rest of us just say "they don't like us".

I guess that depends on whether you see putting a foot on the deck as an attack or not.

Also i think you'll find the term "anti-semite" pre-dates the Israeli state by a fair while....

Israelis have been labelled 'state terrorists'. Israel called what they did 'gunship diplomacy', lol.

Interesting to see on the news, british orthodox rabbis in that demonstration in london in solidarity with the turkish aid workers, and not supporting israel's actions.

They did not 'attack' the ship. Jesus....
I'm not Jesus, and what were they doing then? Dropping in for tea?!?!?
Well if you want the British army definitions:

Attack: Deliberate/Hasty and counter/spoiling: types of offensive action characterised by employment of firepower and manoeuvre to close and destroy or capture the enemy.
Seizing the ship is a better definition.
Seize: To gain possession of a position or terrain, with or without force (also to capture).

But they might have been forced to attack the ships if they tried to run the blockade the next morning, which is my understanding of the flotilla's intent. Apparently they were waiting for daylight so they could film the Israeli response better.

Seizing control of the ships before that was probably the right thing to do to avoid an even bigger incident, but I can't believe they didn't wave off the landing on this ship given how many people were out on deck. I guess they expected them to roll over and/or use disobedience tactics, IIRC one of the organisers stated this was the plan to try and block them from reaching the bridge/engineering etc. Whoever planned the raid owes the Soldiers involved a rather large (probably bedside) apology.

Whether the whole blockade is right/legal is a different kettle of fish...

And I can't believe Turkey is willing to come to blows over this. I don't think they can just sail warships into another country's waters without permission(?), though I guess they can escort them until the aid ships do.

Okay, far too much of a thread to read through fully. From what I see of the videos the Israeli soldiers were attacked as they boarded the ship. What did they expect? Seriously. They are boarding another countries ship in international waters, did they expect the people on board to just roll over when they were all clearly dedicated to the cause of bringing supplies through the blockade to gaza.

The people on board had every right to defend their ship from assault, end of story. The deaths are due to Israels attacks on the ships. They should never be attacking another countries ship especially when it's not even going to Israel, it was going to Palestine.

Nice to see the thread hasn't totally degenerated into a whirlwind of ignorance and keyboard warrior bravado :D

As soon as I saw the news yesterday that there was a ship headed with aid on board towards Gaza I knew it was nothing short of bait and I'm quite disappointed that Israeli government took it so easily. I never for a second doubted that response they (soldiers) would get would be anything but hostile (as demonstrated on the video). I really do not understand what the Israeli cabinet was thinking when they were going to put a lot of armed men trained to kill on board a ship full of people who clearly weren't your typical aid workers but people who clearly hated and expected IDF to board the ship.

I feel for the soldiers who were put into that dangerous and more importantly unnecessary situation but I have little sympathy for the actions of their government even if we know that other side was baiting it in this case.

Just got home before from a big mass protest in manchester city centre with a group of 800 people. Broke down the front doors of BBC Studio for there absolutely atrociousness in showing correct news. One phenomenal character climbed ontop of the bbc building bravely and attatching a palestinian flag to the bbc flags, the palestine flag flys high outside BBC :D

The two words mean different things.

...and yet to most people the two terms are interchangable. For example if I talk about Israeli's most people realise I'm not talking about a Jamaican Rastafarian, Chinese Maoist or English Christian.

You knew what I meant so get off your pedantic high horse before you fall and hurt yourself.

lol what because the bbc for once was actually presenting both sides of the story? that's not what we pay our poll tax (sorry, license fee) for!

No not really. Most people know that many Jews are not Israeli and many Israelis are not Jewish. One is a country and one is a religion.

Its not too complicated really.

Also the term "anti-semitic" was invented by an Austrian. Who was Jewish. But not Israeli.

Its like you don't realise breaking into buildings unrelated to Israel just makes the case for a peaceful Palestine even harder to argue.
