A Summer of traffic hell...

It's been a while since I heard the word Janner. Probably around the time I graduated, left the city and haven't been back since :D
 
in middlesbrough the one main route into town is like that every single day of the year . 3 miles in 45 minutes :( . not helped by one of europes biggest hosptials being on the side of it and now theyre building a big housing estate on the side of it too :/

every councilor for the last 10/15 years has promised a bypass but i cant see it ever happening. total rubbish. makes me wonder how people incharge of roads/traffic get such jobs

Maybe on the cost of fuel, not actual running costs?
 
This is happening in Plymouth, therefore I don't really care. However equally stupid planning is currently in the final stages for the busiest parts of Ipswich. Fortunately, I travel on the roads before and after rush hour. For everything else, there's the bike :D

If I decide to catch the bus tommorrow I don't get a refund for that days insurance or road tax - they have to be paid regardless, and the tyre wear on a 10 mile round trip into town is negligable.

Fuel is the main variable cost.
 
Sounds a joke. I've only driven into Plymouth once and it was pretty hassle free- as you say, less than ten minutes from the A38 to the city centre. Road access was better than in many cities due to the post war planning and space opportunity to build the A374, but now it seems like they're cocking that convenience up.

I'm personally of the opinion that we should build more roads, not narrow down existing ones. All major cities ought to have a free flowing grade separated link to a motorway or dual carriageway (The M32 in Bristol is a good example, as is the M621 in Leeds although it doesn't quite reach the city centre).
 
lol someone sent an email out around the office the other day about this warning us for when we go to our Plymouth office, what a time of year to do it eh?

Still it's quite nice visiting the office, it's overlooking the barbican right on the waters edge :)
 
That's going to be a right PITA for getting to the Barbican etc too from the A38 :p

Sounds like going through Mutley is your best option and hope the tourists don't catch on :p
 
Count yourself lucky, us torbay'ers have been desperate for a bypass into torquay from the A380 for 50 years all we have is a single lane route into torquay where in excess of 35,000 cars a day use the road, its normally solid traffic from 8am to 6pm.

A journey that should take ~8 minutes takes 30 or more due to the congenstion.
 
I just don't understand how so many of these schemes go ahead when the roads are in such a bad state.

In my parent's town they've just spend a fortune putting cobbles outside the post office, building an ornate speed hump and reducing the amount of parking. Yet if you walk a few hundred yards you'll find plenty of pot holes.

In my own town they're closing the main through road for several months for the recommission a Canal. It's lovely idea, but since they can't even maintain the roads to a decent standard why are they spending money on stuff like this.

EDIT: Also the recommissioned canal will only go for about 10 miles down the road because there's another road in the way. One which the local council (hopefully) won't be able to close for 6 months. It's called the M5.

They have started working on that now haven't they ?
 
Never really had a problem driving into Plymouth, I can usually drive right up to North Hill without any stop in traffic. Even Saturdays aren't that bad.

But then again, I've just left Plymouth for the summer... so maybe I've missed it all :)
