I ask as I am genuinely ignorant.:p

It clearly rules the Steam servers, not even TF2, MW2 or BC can touch it, despite their relative beauty, and varied game modes. What is it about the game that makes it so popular? I see an online shooter, plain and simple. What is the hook that makes it so good?

Balance, simplicity, fast paced, easily moddable, extremely well optimised... just general observations. Try playing it.

What's even crazier is how 1.6 is still being played by that many people after so many years. I go on now and again, nothing like the hours I used to play, clan matches, pcws, leagues, etc.

Still think the CSS numbers are dodgy, 1.6 had about four times as many players when CSS was released, then Steam went 'down' for a couple of months, as soon as it came back up there were suddenly five times as many CSS players. Number fudging to increase sales I'm telling you!

^^ steam went down for a couple of months? since when? thats never happened. and there were was a sudden jump in player numbers in the early css days bc of the big update they did that brought a lot more players on board.

anyhow.....the reason its played more then any other?
The graphics are effective and most pcs can run it at a decent framerate
its stupidly balanced.
its just you and your skills, no gimmicks
the guns handle very well
maps are fab (dust 2 anyone!!)
theres loads of mods and different gameplay modes (surf etc)
its a great teamgame.

I tried to pick it up recently and quite frankly couldn't be arsed.

I'm sure if you where there from the start and played it for years it's great, if you're a noob it's nothing special tbh.

tbh i still have a game of css now and again and i still love it......ok dust2 is overplayed. It is just pure skills, no unlocks, no ranks, no perks. Just pure and simple shooting.....you can,t even ironsigh the gun

nothing its old and had its day 3 years ago.

yeh tell that to all the millions that are still playing 1.6.....a game that according to you would have had its day 11 years ago.

games like this stand the test of time for a reason, i dont think people will still be playing bc2, mw2 in 11 years time.

It can be awkward trying to get into I admit. Try some Gungame maps if you havent done so already, they're more like CS for the insta-respawn generation ;)

Besides, when you're dead you have time to flick the kettle on (daytime) or open beer (evening)

What game offers more than that? :D

Dust 2 and aztec :o
Also weapon balance and no silly 'you have 5 kills, so you can see everyone on your minimap'. Nah, plain and simple. You versus them, You have guns, they have guns, you can have a grenade if you like, continue..

Keeps me coming back every time :D

Oh and precision crosshair aiming is fun, although cs 1.6 was a bit more...shall we say unpredictable :D

I put hundreds of hours into css and spent approx 3 years in a clan. Always looked forward to playing it on a Monday and Wed night :).

Tried it and i thought it was crap. You have like few seconds to buy stuff and id need a few mins to look through and see desriptions and see if its what i want then buy it so yeah i didnt like the 5 second buy somit quick thing. Then theres the whole gameplay, i had no clue what to do. Apparently you gotta go disable a bomb i think but fked if i know where it is how to disable it etc. Not very good instructional wise imo. People know all the tricks and spots to camp at so if ur getting into it now then id not bother as u wont have a chance. Also theres the hackers i seen some vids and well i just dont generally play mp games where u can hack or cheat.

My personal fav mp game for fps was mohaa sh. Good fun in that, i know u can hack in it too but i used to play a server that was anti hack aware so were generally ok with the no hackers coming on.

I've had the game 6 years, and it's never hooked me, probably because the standard of other players online was so high whenever I've tried.

I cannot be arsed with it because it is one of those FPS games where map knowledge, gun knowledge and "tricks" give you a huge advantage.

I am not saying it should not but it means as a more casual CS player you will just get steam-rolled endlessly.

The balance you talk about does exist but in a different way. It's a flat balance between everyone. As opposed to some things being strong against others and in turn being weak against something else. This gives a much leveller playing field and promotes a variance in your teams setup as well as giving fresh players a chance to contribute, kill things and generally not feel worthless.

Except when you're on a team of bums who all rush off in different directions and get slaughtered 1 at a time, and you end up penniless and have to try and take out a whole team with only a Deagle and a Flashbang to your name! :D

All part of the appeal IMO, as well as watching the still alive players when you're down, willing them to get that vital headshot or get the bomb down.

If you're new - just spend some time learning the maps, and what guns work well on what maps. Shotguns are useful in Office say, but far less so on Aztec.
