GF has spilt nailpolish remover all over her Macbook and it's gone down under the keys. So, what should she do? She spilt juice in the past but it's full of sugar and knackered the mainboard, obviously nail polish remover isn't full of sugar...

She's unplugged it and turned it off for now.

What is it with some people who eat/drink/..clean their nails by their machines? You'd be careful next to another piece of electronics yet computers seemingly don't have the same respect.

And sorry, that doesn't really help. I'd normally suggest sticking it in a hot airing cupboard but am not sure being that it's nail varnish remover.

It should be alright as the nail polish remover will just evaporate will it not?

I'd leave it for a day and see what happens!

Well this is the third time she's spilt now and i'm sick of telling her the same thing over and over again all the time! Cheers for the reply guys :)

I don't know whats more disturbing...the fact that she was out of the kitchen or that she is able to use an expensive piece of kit as a laptop when all her thought processes revolve around; cleaning the house, what's for dinner and fluffy kittens.

Tell her that she doesn’t need to put nail varnish on her Mac, it's not that type of fashion accessory.

Leave it in a hot place such as an airing cupboard for at least 96 hours. Do not try and turn it on, make sure the battery is removed too.

Nail polish remover usually contains acetone and water - acetone isn't a problem as it evaporates but electronics don't like much H2O :p

It's a unibody so she can't remove the battery unfortunately. I've told her not to turn it back on and leave it alone for a bit. It gets really warm on her desk because it's near a window anyway.

It'll be fine, I use nail polish remover to clean PCB's\chips all the time, I even used a peach scented one once and my PC is still going strong and smells peachy fressh.

If you let it dry out it shouldn't cause any technical damage, it might mash up any coatings though, like the keys it went over, my ex did the same on the lid of hers and ended up with a big stain over the back

She can pretty much touch type anyway so it wouldn't cause her any distress....unfortunately. What will it take for her to learn her lesson?! Suggestions welcome...

Chicks + technology, eh? ;)
