Hey guys,

I need a few ideas for a car I am planning to buy in the next 2-4 months.

I am 25 and this will be my second car (have an astra currently).

I am not sure what my max budget is at the moment (but circa under 50k if I use some kind of financing, which I don't mind as long as it adds up).

It will probably be driven between 2-5k miles a year with little motorway action. I guess I want something that looks good and has decent specs.

I don't really want to get screwed on insurance, petrol and maintaince but I guess this is unavoidable with nice cars?

I would probably prefer second hand so I don't take the depreciation hit.

If anyone has any ideas I would really appreciate it.

The only car I have considered so far is a Mercedes CLS and a few fantasies about an Aston Martin :).

Cheers!

I just figured I can 'kind of' afford up to that much but I am more than happy to spend less. I work in London so commute in by train. It is just for weekends and the occasional evening.

Although, there is a small chance my mum may need to borrow it for local driving so that rules out hardcore sports cars. It would also be nice to have a bit of a boot and space for more than 2 people.

But I could always just get her a cheap run around if I can't combine all of these things.

Any thoughts on what could meet the needs of the above? I doubt I would even drive it myself 5k a year.

I was vague by purpose just to see people's own thoughts on what cars they like in that range so I can look into them.

+1

Narrow down your criteria. Otherwise i'll be speccing you something like a BMW 635d going by your post :D

Why do you want a 50k car for only the second car you have owned? What's the point, It doesn't buy you anything hugely nicer than a much lower budget.

My second vehicle could be available for a lot less than £50K. Open top, nice engine noise, ecological as it uses a lot of recycled parts. Fuel consumption is acceptable as long as you don't go too far with it. Cheap to insure (I pay about £250 a year with limited mileage). Soft and hard tops can be bought for it but I tend to use it in the wet.

Another epic thread in the making. You want a 50k car but care about fuel economy and don't really know what you want?

I don't completely know what I want but I have a few ideas (M5, Merc CLS). I just don't know enough about cars to say out of all the cars out there this is for me!

I know fuel economy isn't going to be great on whatever I pick but I can at least try to keep it in mind when choosing model and engine size?

I am probably sounding really stupid but I am being genuine here!

Thing is I think most people here would argue that 2-5k miles/year aint enough to really make fuel consumption a huge issue mate.

Still, narrow down what you like in a car, and we'll (try) to help.

You are going to find getting a loan for 50k is going to be a talk order in itself!

This thread is just huh. If you don't know much about cars how have you decided that financing a 50 grand one is a good idea?

Well I certaintly don't need a 50k car. That is the max end of my budget and something I could reasonably afford on a good finance deal now, or in cash if I hold off until mid/early next year.

I have a 54 reg astra, which costs about half the price of my watch. I just figured it was time for an upgrade!

I could happily buy a 10-20k car if it makes sense to do so, but if I can get a lor more bang for my money I don't mind spending more. I just need some help!

Hang on, if you have £50k to blow, why not replace the Astra with something nicer and use whatever you buy as your daily? You've said yourself that you're not after a hardcore racer, so a nice E90 330 or something of that ilk would seem to suit.

*edit*
Just re-read OP and notice you said this would be your second car, not that this would be used as a second car *DOH*.

Anyway, 330 recommendation still stands.

 :( I'm confused.

So basically you have up to 50k, but you would be fine with a 10-20k car. It's not like 10-20k get's you a banger, but 50k gets you a Ferrari Enzo.

If i was you, who just sounds like you want a nice car with a bit of poke and good looks - how about something like an Audi TT-S?

Actually, until you narrow down your budget, i could list about a hundred cars which are goodlooking, have a bit of poke and are between £0-£50,000.

I am guessing most people who buy expensive cars aren't bothered about cars except that they want nice cars.

I love nice cars and I want to learn more and I am starting to learn more. So I am bothered just not very knowledgable at the moment.

I would have thought with a large cash deposit and a decent salary I could buy a 50k car? Maybe I am wrong. I not I could just wait it out until I have cash.

I don't even know what the best way to buy a car is either... Whether it is in cash, finance, lease etc!

To be less vauge I would probably like a car less than five years old also.
