I used to eat them raw all the time, better than scalding the roof of your mouth off with them, and no ill effects I can remember, not had one for years though.
Don't eat it whatever you do. What happens is there are sharp particles that when heated the corners melt, round off and become safe to eat, if you don't toast them you can get internal lacerations which is also known as heamoanusitis.
