Which EVO?

no, probably 6-7k (during the times when it is below freezing and too dangerous to ride) and i will use it in the summer for a bit of fun

if i went with a 7, it wouldnt be old. Also, my first bike was a 97 gsxr-600 which did many many miles, also never skipped a beat. I know cars and bikes are different, but a jap car is better than a french car for reliability, generalising here.

I think assuming an old Evo is going to be reliable because you have a reliable Jap bike is a bit naive :p

Well you have a point about naivety, Obviously my EVO knowledge leaves something to be desired, else I wouldnt be asking this basic question :)

Aren't the service intervals on the earlier Evos a right pain in the rear as well? i.e they come thick and fast.

Might be something else to consider, although i'm not sure at what point they were to longer ones.

A half-tidy, standard(ish) 6 would be where I'd put my money.

Lots of people talk about crank-walk in the pre-5s, but I'm told its no where near as big a concern as the internet makes it out to be, but still, anything before a 5 is showing its age, and a 6 is in its prime, imo.

That said, it depends what you're after - if you want something a bit more expensive looking, then you may be better pushing your budget a little higher and opting for a 7, but I suspect this isn't a concern if you are willing to consider Evos as old as a 3.

Don't dismiss an Evo 3 rs, easy to service, quick with its 1190kg weight and tail happy fun. I trapped 104 1/4 with a stock power one on my first attempt

Problem being its looks and lack of turn in compared to later cars...and interior plastics to make fox proud.

You can even bung on the later kit to make them a bit meaner looking like here http://www.lancerregister.com/showthread.php?t=89454&page=70

Why do you specifically want an Evo?

The more *sensible* option would be to buy an Impreza STI.

I wouldn't buy an Evo unless:

A.) I'd read up quite a bit about them
B.) I really specifically wanted an Evo

Both of which are true for me.

If you have 7k, then you really have 6k for one with a grand in the bank.

That should get you a decent 5 or a mediocre/tatty/high mileage 6.

7 is probably out.

Evo 6 Tommi Makkinen edition would be the one I'd get if I were in the market for an Evo. Probably aren't going to find one for 7k though.

IIRC the service intervals are worse on the Evo 4 onwards because of the AYC needing it's fluid changed every 4500 miles or something stupid like that. The Evo 3 didn't have AYC and is therefore seen by some purists as the last proper Evo with the newer ones being less fun to drive.

I want an evo because it meets all of the silly criteria i have set. It was closely followed by a skyline R32, which I am also still reading about, but the evo is more "me".

There is no rush for me to buy it, so reading up is exactly what I will do.
So far im leaning toward the 5/6 as you say, though I would quite like the simplicity and weight of the 3. Hmmmm

7k can get you a nice 6, and assuming you can build up the 'maintenance fund' for it quite quickly after buying you shouldn't have to worry about spending the whole budget :p

In your budget a 5. Not much in it AFAIK between 5 and 6.

Also look at scoobs - I believe they are cheaper to maintain.

This is some good advice, sounds like a scoob would be more suitable for you as they are cheaper to maintain. They're also more common than evo's and parts are generally cheaper. Whilst they may not have the handling prowess of an Evo you're unlikely to notice on the road unless you drive like a complete lunatic (and modding the scoob can result in far improved handling anyway if you want.) Seem's like you're set on an Evo and won't consider anything else but take a look at some scoobs, 7k should get you an STI 7 UK model which will be more modern than an Evo for the same cash.
