If you jumped through a portal back to the year 1300AD

A Zippo.

I have always thought this. Imagine Einstein with the current knowledge of physics as his starting point instead of the very basic laws he had back then.

thing is you don't know all the current physics only a very basic level :p

You can teach them the basics though, simple formulae, everything you know. It won't be a lot, but it'll be far advanced past what they know, and it'd mean we would be much more advanced in the current day. I imagine being able to construct a generator and motor would revolutionize a lot of stuff.

Hmm, if you could go through the portal at will, you could take books through into the past, then come back to the (now more advanced) present, get books with even more information in, take them back, etc

Nothing in all fairness. I know the general concepts of a lot but I doubt I could get them to work from nothing. Remember you'd have no tools, no nothing.

The division of labour, then become a medieval tycoon.
Anything tech or concepts beyond that and I'd be burned at the stake or ducked for being a warlock or witch.

Oh yeah, and pop over to see the Mayans about the 2012 craik ;)

I think teaching them to boil drinking water.

Goodness gracious no, my good fellow. They need this valuable time to help perfect brewing techniques, if you distract them with fripperies such as easy sources of hygienic drinking water then we may not end up with the fine alcoholic beverages we know these days - who knows what sort of disasters could result? I fear you haven't thought this through adequately - we might end up without Tennents or Dog even...

if this ever happened to me, i'd be hoping to god i had my little Black Book which'd be a great help. i'd then set to work upgrading the technology of the era to my needs. Let the Future be damned!

with that and my knowledge of 19th, 20th and 21st century mechanics, i think i'd be pretty comfy on my MASSIVE throne of wealth.
