a second car was needed to replace the S4. The S4 itself was supposed to replace my old mk3 Golf but that didnt happen, it just wasnt involved/fun enough in terms of driving.

i came to the conclusion that the second car had to include the quite/comfortable/sensible aspects of the S4 but i decided there was no point trying to top the mk3 in terms of giggles.

ive ended up with another Golf.

2000 W, mk4 20vt, black, 3dr, black heated leather recaros, climate, cruise, remap, 148k. interior is practically as new. front end is suprisingly free of stonechips, it really feels like its been looked after.

going to give it a real good going over to get it back to maximum health

to do:
front wishbone bushes
brake fluid
gearbox oil
"engine flush"
injector seals (maybe)
new wheels/tyres (as the current tyres dont handle the power that well and there is more power to come)

pics to follow.

found one big boost leak lastnight and re arranged the plumbing to the dump valve. the car is no longer laggy and i expect the missing MPG will start coming back (only averaging 33mpg before)

Great so 2 Golf GTI's now neither from the era when GTI meant something other than 'meh'.

Were you not tempted to use this opportunity to purchase something nice?

i didnt fancy an earlier one. ive already got one thats "uncivilised" and mk4s do everyday workhorse duties perfectly.

I note this one has been 'really looked after' but sounds like it has a set of Linglongs on it?

New wheels - going for some Audi Reps?

Could have, I dunno, strayed from VAG for once. You said you wanted a more inspiring drive, so STEP AWAY FROM THE VAG!

:p

this one is just transport, quiet and comfortable. after the S4 experience i completely realise theres no point trying to combine newer/civilised/fun so hence im gonna stick with the mk3 for those duties

as for audi reps, by coincidence i was offered a set of "nuvolaris" the night before i went to see the car.

sort-of audi reps, in the sense that audi didnt actually make themselves. theyre from a concept car they did. shame theyre 18 inch though as that would defy the point of quiet/comfortable

tyres wise its on 16 inch conti premium contacts and theyre a bit hopeless and with the generally hopeless handling it can be a bit of a handful!

that wouldnt work though. ive had a couple mk2s in the past, i wouldnt want one for everyday use, the mk3 is no longer suited to everyday use either. the criteria was sensible everyday motoring, the mk4 hits that nail on the head

So are you going to scrap the mk3 now? I can understand a Lotus for nice days but a knackered old mk3 Golf that was never any good in the first place seems not worth it.

no, not at all. the mk3 is staying, this isnt an exercise in preserving some old mk3 either, the GF needs a car too hence two cars, one completely sensible and then my fun one

one completely sensible and then my fun one

Can you please explain which is which? As both are relatively dull, but yet neither are particularly "average" with the foibles of a 1.8T I'd not be seeing it as an entirely "sensible" choice, granted they are fine when they work, but my god they like their EML.

A MK4 Golf with with 150K, cool. I wonder how many times its had the fans replaced in that time.

I dont understand how people can sell such rubbish effortlessly and I have a perfectly good Civic with 50k on the clock that I cant sell for **** :(

due to VAGs questionable service intervals these engines do end up with a burnt oil which can cause issues in the future. im not sure how ill tackle that with mine yet but at the very least the sump will be coming down and the oil pump pick up will be cleaned up. im gonna aim to have as much sludge dissolved as possible, but as yet ive not even seen inside the engine, im just expecting it to look like all the others ive seen.

looks like you definately bought the wrong car then ;)

ive not come across that one yet and ive worked on loads of them. far worse things to go wrong imo like dual mass flywheels cocking up
