Grumble grumble...cheap car

Hey, it's all about the journey. That crazy, topsy-turvy journey of humour, pain, anger, resentment, disbelief, shock then humour again that only the best of threads make you experience :D

Voted 5 stars.

LOL! Fox - when you're on form, you're on fire my man.

So with all the hilarity that this thread has seen, who gave it a 1 star rating?

It was PeterNem! Get him!

Gotta agree with the last few posts though. Fox, yours made me laugh and is the sole reason I'm posting in this thread.

Here Iain, have 5 stars on me! *click*

Woo. Several glaring errors but I really can't be arsed to argue any more, it's fairly irrelevant. Anyway the only reason it's dragged on so long is that Ive been trying to use it as some handy chat about the possibilities once i've sold the Saab and not started a new thread every other day. As it's taken a while to sell so it's taken a while for this to reach a conclusion..

Anyway, summary from my perspective... Saab should be sold this weekend, buyer coming over on the train from London. Only loosing 500 quid max on it, need to buy something for circa 2k in the next week or so as he's taking the car with him. The cash will allow me to buy eternal happiness, or 10 ipads. Off to look at that red accord this afternoon, quite keen on that one

What so before bombing the price right down you were attempting to sell it privately for more than you paid for it from a dealer? :p

Come on Iaind, stop trying to convince yourself. The Saab was £7.5k and you said yourself previously there wasnt much wrong with the Mondeo, it was certainly no tatty nail. You are just trying to ease the pain of the £1500 loss :p

It wasnt a nail, but needed a bit of TCL on the bodywork and the rear subframe needed doing within 10k miles, so wasnt a mint example.

Even so, still not sure how you get to £1500 from £7500 - £7000 :p

Yes, in retrospect I should have kept it. It would still have been nice to sell it for 4k and do the same thing I'm doing now but wouldnt be as desirable as it is now

You should be able to get a really well looked after 98-02 Accord for circa £2000 if thats what your after, infact less if private for sure. So many of the owners of these cars have looked after them and are probably old/careful/whatever :)

When i was looking a few years back, i'd say pretty much all of them had lots of history (despite their age) and the bodywork was almost always in great condition (no dings/bumps/dents/marks and only very light scratches) except the odd "family runaround".

Again, you want to be looking at the executive ones (everything as standard + leather seats and command practically zero premium over the rest) + 2.0ltr and nothing else tbh. The black 2.0 type-v ones do command a slight premium but can look quite nice and seem to come with FHSH as standard (:p) because of the sort of owners they've previously had but avoid the rather less economical 2.3 type-v ones.

Thanks for that. The one I'm off to look at is a 1.8 SE Executive - 2001 with 79k miles. It's up at 1700 from a dealer with a warranty.

Spoke to him yesterday, apparently it's absolutely immaculate (we'll see!), tons of main dealer history and old reciepts. 2 Owners from new but that doesnt put me off on a 10 year old car. Needs tax, but if it's as immaculate as it sounds then I'm going to try and get him to do it for 1500 with tax and a full tank of fuel. Would prefer a 2.0 but not that fussy really, especially not at that price! Only downside is it's in newport, but that's not a huge distance to travel, so taking the afternoon off and going to see it :)

...well thus far I have just contented myself with reading rather than saying anything, since I really have nothing useful to say on this matter other than 'iain, what the hell are you doing? ...have you had a bang on the head or something?”

Oh dear, oh deary me.

I thought I could turn cars over fast, but 8 weeks ...you've beaten my best by a month.

No worries...it sounds a decent price from the brief description.

A few questions..

If its 2001 , exact reg date? it may have changed now but i recall a year ago or so the ones after march/april 1st (can't remember which) were about £300 a year to tax, whereas the others were £200 before this. Its no biggy but as this is a cost saving exercise..

Has it got leather seats btw? or the blue cloth trim, or worse? its just when it comes to reselling i'd imagine the ones with heated leather seats and other additional extras these usually have are easier to move along after....

Is it manual i assume? (probably based on the price as auto's command more generally) However, if its automatic then you REALLY want to make sure its a cold start and if they've warmed it up before you arrive then start walking ... :p

October ISTR.

It's red with heated black leather, climate, bose, electric sunroof...

It's a manual, which I think would suit a revvy vtec more

Ah sounds a good price tbh but as said it'll be in the higher tax bracket.

Only other thought is that if you want any kind of practically...the hatch one is great. The saloon one which i had was pretty awful for fitting anything of any size in (like any saloon).

I'm not talking fridges etc either...small tv tables....just won't fit! Just seems like anything that is not really tiny just fails fit in the boot or on the back seats...

It isn't a Type-R, that VTEC engine is not there for thrashability or performance. It's there for fuel economy purposes.

Oh of course, but there's still very little torque low down which wouldn't suit an auto box that well IMO. May be wrong...

Was a very nice car, only flaws were a small tear in the leather on the drivers seat and there was no air coming from the vents. I can get the leather sorted easily enough and he's going to sort the ventilation, sounds like a pipe has just come loose or something.

He's taking the 1500 I wanted to give him, so provided this bloke turns ip to buy my car I'll be calling him on sat to pay a deposit and pick it up next week.

Question about the Bose stereo, is replacing it an easy affair? Would like to keep the sub if I can

Jesus, it's really not that complicated.

Guy needs more cash.
Guy sells £6k car and buys a £2k car.
Guy has a load of spare cash.

And PMSL at people that still live with their mum and dad attempting to give detailed financial advice ;).
