My staying power is useless... :(

First off, any incling of decent new phones out in the next 3 months (say the euro version of the EVO ;))? Why 3 months, because that was when I was planning to upgrade... :)

Secondly do any networks still do euro/worldwide texts and MMS's within a text allowance as standard (like O2 used to do)? Specifically T-Mobile and Orange, where I can't find any info about it.

Thirdly to the meat and two veg so to speak...

Desire or X10... If so where from?

Why the loss of determination? Because I just realised I can get a new phone with enough minutes and texts etc for £25 a month on a 18 month contract.... I just changed down to a £20 simplicity tarriff with the same minutes/texts on O2 and since they now don't do the above euro texts etc. I think I may leave in protest...:p

I'm fairly sure you know what I'm going to say but I'll say it anyway :p

The only phone coming out in the near future is the Samsung Galaxy S and the iPhone 4. You know the reasons why it's better to get an Android phone so I wont repeat them again ;)

Unsure about a worldwide text allowance but the best network for deals and internet usage provided you can get a signal is T-Mobile, via Mobilephonesdirect. Haven't seen anything better.

I'd firmly take the Desire over the X10 (this is mostly from what I have read, I've only used one a couple of times).

It's battery is worse, it tends to cost more, it's software is dated and there's no real schedule for updates yet. No OLED display.

But it's camera is slightly better.

Granted the Desire battery isn't anything to shout from the rooftops about but I am getting an easy 2-2.5 days from mine at the moment with moderate-ish usage.

It could be worth hanging on and seeing how the Galaxy S is, it looks quite impressive and it has more power than the other phones at the minute, but you can never really tell until it's been reviewed and put through it's paces.

Any questions, ask.

But the X10 has a bigger screen and is far better looking... However it does seem to be having battery issues and the no charge issue sounds worrying.

The Galaxy S is pretty much off my list before it even starts because tbh it's a Samsung and I have a thing about them (along with Motorola), yes it looks less fisher price than the standard Samsung but still it's not that much better... :p

I had a look at the Streak earlier and that looked quite nice, just a little to big to really be a phone.

I am seriously tempted by the desire, but everyone seems to want it, which is a little annoying. :p How is it holding up on the scrapes and scratches side of things, glass good? No flakey paint round the screen or anything?

As for contracts there seems to be two good ones I'e found. One on Orange from Dialaphone which is:

Dolphin 30 reduced to £25 (appears to be actual reduction not cashback...)
300 mins
unlimited texts
500MB web
Comes with the Desire Black...

The other one on buymobilephones is T-Mobile, £25
300 mins
300 texts
"unlimited" data
1 month "free"

Tempted by the Black Desire... When are T-Mob and Orange merging?

Mine is very good quality, the screen is basically scratch proof. It feels very solid, pleasant to hold. Certainly no flakey paint anywhere :p

They've started merging the masts, but I don't think they will start offering phones as a whole for a good while yet, so it's not worth holding out for.

The masts are merging but from what I've heard we're still going to have t-mobile and Orange as separate brands.

Hardware wise the Galaxy S pretty much poops on the desire, far better screen better battery life, thinner, lighter, 16/8GB etc. Also looking at the performance of the phones its far more powerful,
Here is a GPU comparison for some of the leading smartphones:

* Motorola Droid: TI OMAP3430 with PowerVR SGX530 = 7-14 million(?) triangles/sec
* Nexus One: Qualcomm QSD8×50 with Adreno 200 = 22 million triangles/sec
* iPhone 3G S: 600 MHz Cortex-A8 with PowerVR SGX535 = 7 million triangles/sec
* Samsung Galaxy S: S5PC110 with PowerVR SGX540 = 90 million triangles/sec

If Samsung can keep there promises with the firmware then this is the best of the current batch of phones hardware wise. The build quality is some what unkown but the demo model i had a go with seemed very nice, just want to have a try with their software to see if its going to be the full package.

Indeed, on paper the Galaxy S should be quite something.

Samsung have let down in the past though with regard to phone quality and firmware promises.

I'm looking forward to seeing how it fares! Is there a set release date yet for the UK do you know?

There's quite a good preview style review on GSMArena - http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_i9000_galaxy_s-review-467.php

Final words

The Samsung I9000 Galaxy S is certainly a remarkable handset. Its software might need a bit more tuning before it hits the shelves but its hardware is already impressive enough.

Certainly having the best display in the business will attract quite a lot of customers by itself. Now add the HD video recording that the Galaxy S holds against its competitors and you get yourselves a pretty decent deal.

We wouldn’t go as far as saying that Samsung I9000 Galaxy S is the best Android handset just yet, but it’s certainly in contention for the throne. And if Samsung manages to polish up the already really nice TouchWiz UI before the Galaxy S gets released officially it will certainly become the handset to beat.

Even more, it’s expected that it will hit the market in about a month, which is even sooner than the Samsung Wave planned release. It will easily be your first opportunity to get yourself a SuperAMOLED HD-flaunting smartphone.

It’s pretty clear that Samsung’s first attempts of an Android-running flagship is a success but the jury is still out on whether or not it’s the uberphone that can make up for the delay as its competitors are already on the market.

ALthogh the Galaxy S does sound interesting it looks like it's trying so hard to be an iPhone... Shape and software look almost iphoneesque...

Still very tempted by the X10 looks though... :p

Is graphics performance actually going to make a difference in every day life?

You're going to buy an X10 because it looks a bit better?

It's not as good as the Desire, and it will cost you more. I can't see the logic in that :p

I hope the Galaxy S is like the iPhone 4, iPhone 4 with Android and a HD OLED screen would be epic win.

Edit: Found a link with a direct comparison between the two - http://www.gizmag.com/review-htc-desire-vs-sony-ericsson-xperia-x10/14885/

They seem to prefer the screen on the X10, which I suppose is a matter of opinion, I wasn't taken aback by it when I used one but it's personal preference I guess.

All forum posts and website articles will pretty much say the same thing as the one I've linked (you can look around). I know some of the X10 problems may have been fixed now but from what I understand many still remain :(

The Winner

The X10 has such potential. If Sony Ericsson could iron out the kinks in their software, and improve format support with FLAC and DivX support, it'd be a hard one to beat in terms of media, but as it stands, it's really hard to recommend - the first thing I'd do if I bought one would be install a vanilla Android 2.1 ROM.

If you haven't figured it out by now, the HTC Desire is the clear winner of this shootout. Despite the shortcomings of the AMOLED screen, it's by far the nicest Android phone I've ever used. If you want an Android phone today, this is what you should be buying.

My head says "Desire, Desire, Desire", however my heart says "but it's so beautiful...." :p

TBH I'm still ruing the fact we don't have the EVO design over here.

Having tired both I did find that indoors the screen seemed a lot better on the Desire but the X10 pipped it in size. The X10 also felt nicer in the hand...

Id go with the X10 :D

R2BA016 update is due W/C 21st June 2010, which resolves the battery problem. You also get a 2 year warranty with Sony Ericsson if the handset goes wrong :)

Yes, the X10 is missing the 2.1 update. However, what does that offer you currently that the X10 can't not do? :)

The Camera deffo isn't one.

Desire.

Aesthetics are a major thing to some people, this is where the HTC falls short IMO.

The Desire is also far from perfect as it has it faults as well. :p

Shortcomings of AMOLED? I thought AMOLED was superior to LCD?

It is superior, they must just have decided they preferred it on size I suppose.

The X10 is badly lacking though, I think honestly you would be disappointed if you got one, there's virtually no developer support or anything like the Desire has (in comparison anyway)

I know you prefer the X10 but having analysed both it has more shortcomings than the Desire.

It's main points are it looks better and has a better camera.

Everything else flops quite a bit compared. :p

Oh, and those pictures are both quite bad examples, I could take a lot better. Lighting doesn't seem to be bad either.

The pictures where taken a member on another forum back to back. So there isn't really a better comparison that. :D

Its also much better at multimedia functions, as audio reproduction is much better then the Desire.

I wouldn't say its a flop compared to the Desire, as both phones are selling very well at the moment.

So what makes the Desire better then?
