Well doing it in a crowd of people like a muppet will of course get you spotted, if you do it from the top of a building into an open area in a town with people walking around and not sitting focusing on other people it will be a different story.

US Navy Successfully Shoots Down Aircraft With Laser Weapon
The US Navy has successfully destroyed a number of unmanned drones using the Laser Weapon System. (LaWS) It is reportedly the first "detect-thru-engage" shoot-down of a simulated threat target in a combat-like scenario over water.
The weapon can replace the 20mm cannon normally mounted on Phalanx (or R2D2 as it is affectionately known) and has the advantage of vaporising the target rather than raining shrapnel and sometimes unexploded shells on the impact zone.
"Further development and integration of increasingly more powerful lasers into Surface Navy LaWS will increase both the engagement range and target sets that can be successfully engaged and destroyed," said Naval spokesperson Captain David Kiel.

1W CW is very modest for a laser tbh. I guess its not bad for a portable one though. The laser cutter in the other thread is 40W which is serious power.
I should point out (as a laser guy) that google don't protect against direct exposure to the beam, just scatter. At 1W, there will be serious damage even if you are wearing googles.

I don't want , nor understand how these can actually be on sale if they're so dangerous?
As someone else above said, what if an idiot gets a hold of one of these? I can imagine these becoming a fad with the young idiots who think it's funny to drive along in the car throwing things out of the window at people, only the consequences with these kinds of lasers could ruin someone's life.

Exactly what I was thinking. The potential consequences of abuse are horrific. And furthermore, if chavs get hold of these, you can be 100% certain that they will be abused.
Indeed, surely if such powerful ones are so easily available now they need regulating to as much extent as possible.
