Is my 4870X2 dying? ADVICE NEEDED

Hmm. I'm bracing myself for a long wait and several 'arguements' to be honest. From what I've heard Powercolor aren't the best when it comes to customer services.

As such I've bought myself an nvidia GT240 for £60 to tide me over, as I'm desktop PCless at the moment. Will be interesting to use nvidia for a while, (been ati for 2 yrs now).

My rationale for getting the GT240 is to use as a dedicated physx card once I get my main ati back/ new one/ whatever. Just found out that Mafia 2 will use physx.

you do know it will be a pain to get it to work along side your 4870x2?

From some threads I've seen they won't offer you anything near the standard of the 4870 X2.

Good choice with the GTS 240.At least it'll be of some use when/if you get a 4870x2 like replacement.

What's the legal stance on RMA replacements though? If Powercolor can repair it then fair enough. If Powercolor can replace it with a fully working 4870x2 then fair enough. What is certainly not fair enough is if they offer a card with much lower performace.
Also, what obligation do OCUK as the original retailer have in all this?

I'm not into cars, so pardon the anology - but isn't it like taking your ferrari into the garage and coming along the next day to be presented with a Ford Focus???

It probably is a good analogy. But the Ferrari would still be under warranty.
As your card was over 12 months old, the fate of it is now in the hands of Powercolor, not OCUK. As we all know, Powercolors after sales service is just about one of the worse there is. Good luck to you, but i think you have already prepared yourself for how much they are going to shaft you.

Well, I haven't posted a follow up until now as I've still been waiting on this RMA for over a month. Received an email today saying they have shipped a 5770 as a 'replacement'. Needless to say I am spitting blood at this and have sent a very stern email. A single 5770 as a direct replacement for a 4870x2 is just a joke surely???

The thing that's really annoyed me is that I expressly told ocuk not send a replacement card out BEFORE telling me what they were thinking of sending. I think I'd rather have a credit note than a single 5770.

Any advice folks?

I wouldn't want a 5770 as a replacement. ~£400 to £120? No thanks. Not only that, but a 4870x2 is 5870 territory performance wise too.

Also, even factoring in current market price, a 4870x2 (two recently sold on Ebay for £175 each), they are closer to a 5830.

I would not accecpt anything less then a 5850 indeed the 4870x2 is as fast as a 5870 it's party one of the reason i've not upgraded even tho i just had to spend £65 on a new cooler for mine, Don't accecpt the 5770 send links to make performance comparison charts to email to them and also photo copy you're receipt of the 4870x2 @ £390 and show them how much you paid then send them the cost of a 5850 and 5870 if they still refuse Call trading standards on powercolour.

OCUK outside of the 12 months don't have todo a thing you need powercolour but you might be banged to their policy of the extended warranty.

Well, smack my stupid eyes up. Turns out I didn't quite read the email properly, and it turns out they are send ing me two 5770's. Two, not one.

After doing a wee bit of research this actually seems like a good deal as some reviews pit a CF 5770 setup as good as a 5870!

If I'm honest I would still rather have a sinle slot solution than crossfire, even though my motherboard supports it (4870x2 was single slot remember). This is mainly because I bought an nvidia GT240 to tide me over and I'd like to use this in the other PICIe slot for physx.

So, what do you guys think? Should I:

1. Take the 2x 5770's and shut up, and forget about physx.
2. Kick up a fuss and get them to swap for a 5850. A 5850 is more or less the same price as 2x 5770's. (I'm guessing a 5870 would be out of the question)
Then I can mess about with physx and my GT240 won't go to waste.

Take the 2x5770s. That is very generous imo. I have heard good things about 2x5770s for gaming.

Agreed take it mate thats a good offer, last time i RMA'ed something to OcUK I had to pay for a replacement while they tested the faulty product even though it was less than a week old, the lad in the shop said if the product was found to be faulty they'd re-credit me back and then when I hadn't heard anything for a few weeks.

I phoned up only to be told they have no record of this rma, to say I was ****ed off was an understatement, not only had they kept my rma'd product they also took £100 pound off me.
So I was out of pocket by an extra hundred and a brand new corsair hx620 down.

Take the 2x5770's and run mate thats the best advice your get :D

Ask them for a 5850. If they say no then get the two 5770's.
At least you asked and wont be thinking what if...

Aye, this is what I'll do. It does look like CF 5700's is actually a good replacement. It's just that for various reasons I'd prefer a single slot card like the 5850. If they won't go for the 5850 option I guess I'm not really losing out, so all in not a bad result. Take em and run :)

I'll let you know the outcome.

Yep, two 5770's will be an excellent replacement. I haven't used these myself but from what I've read two 5770's perform to either a little under or in some cases a little over a 4870X2. I so nearly bought two myself. Enjoy. :)

Ok, quick update folks. OCUK cannot, or will not 'swap' for a 5850. The only alternative would be a credit note, at partial value of the cards which is obviously not the thing to do.
So, crossfired 5770's here I come. They should be delivered tomorrow. All in all not a bad result I guess from what most of you say :)

That's a better turnout. In fact, it's about as close to a 4870x2 as you can get. A 5770 is almost exactly the same performance as a 4870, so two in crossfire would be pretty much the same, performance wise. Enjoy the lower power draw, lower temps, and much lower noise. :D
