Canned Laughter

New fact for me today, Friends was filmed in front of a live audience.
So are lots of shows....its still canned laughter
Indeed, as was Cheers, that also had a canned laughter track.

The first meeting of Mickey and Mallory in "Natural Born Killers" has to be one of the best satires on the american sitcom/laughter track farce.

Love QI, just so brilliant and you learn stuff at the same time always a plus.

Also like Never mind the buzzcocks.
I did like Mock the week but its got tiresome now, only really enjoyed it when frankie bolye did his jokes.

Mock the week has never had canned laughter before  not seen this new episode yet. I thought the BBC had pretty much banned canned laughter, it's almost entirely from live audiences (but will obviously be faded up and down, and because of the cuts can seem to come/go suddenly)

i was gonna say, i'm sure they actually had an audience, infact there are episodes where the comedians go into the audience.. unless they've changed the format.

^ Thats pretty much all that needs to be said.

He was pretty much the main attraction and his comedy was so out of the blue and shocking compared to the rest that it had you in stitches. Its been poor without him.

Often it isn't canned laughter, just horrendous editing. If they kept in all the bits where it's just the audience laughing the program would need to be ten minutes longer. Instead they chop it off and go straight to the next person talking. Happens in a lot of live panel shows.

Mock the week isn't amazing anyway. Buzzcocks was ok but Bill Bailey gone it is just an insult celeb fest, QI is pretty good but I prefer Brooker to Fry so You have been watching is my new favorite panel show.

Again can be put down to editing to an extent, and that things are just a bit funnier in a live setting, all those "you had to be there moments" you are there, so you laugh, and everyone around you laughing makes people more likely to laugh. Not to mention that you could get the laughter from an unbroadcastable joke tacked onto what was essentially the build up to it, seems to happen a fair bit.

I don't like canned laughter. I know when to laugh I don't have to be prompted.

Perhaps in the future TV Programmes will have to have a warning:

"THIS PROGRAMME CONTAINS CANNED LAUGHTER WHICH SOME WATCHERS MIGHT FIND OFFENSIVE"

Yes, I know when to laugh, imagine if the equivalent was used in a book, with a "ha, ha" after each quip! Certainly books like Catch 22 would be half an inch thicker!

There is one reason only as to why Mock The Week is poor these days and for the last two seasons. Frankie Boyle left the show, he was the comedian for that show.

It depends on the style of show as to whether it should have studio laughter, nothing imo should have actual recorded laughter. Something like mock the week or never mind the buzzcocks where it's essentially panel format stand up comedy works best for most people with a natural level of laughter, as if you're sat in the audience, they seem to have mastered the art a lot better on radio 4 but then again I think those things are much less edited.

QI is awesome, except for the episode(s) where they had the fat, drunken numpty on. You know the one. Fry and the others spent the whole show cringing whenever he opened his mouth.

I can't remember his name because I've blocked it out, along with everything else about him :p His only claim to fame is being, fat, drunk, and spouting nonsense in the name of comedy. Should be shot, imho :p
