Virgin Media - 50mb

Flashed my router with DD-WRT last night, thought it fried it but all I had to do was reset everything. Still getting the same speeds and still getting a slight pause/loading time between pages that on my old connection (20mb) didn't happen although that was using a Netgear router.

Power level is a little high, but not enough to cause you too many problems.
May want to consider a 3dB attenuator to see if that helps - I might have one spare to send you, I'll let you know later.

SNR is fine too, but you are getting a fair few uncorrectables - I'll compare it to mine later, but I'm sure I've got a low low number of them.

Thanks mate, appreciate your help :)

Chaos is correct, all four Downstream channels should be active.

pheonixdancer: Netgear Powerline Adapters have been around for ages, they are a very good way of networking a home without having to lay fresh "internet cable" (wtf is an internet cable?, surely you mean network cable) or have the hastle of wireless deadspots, generally the only time they don't work properly is when the wiring for the house is very old or unsafe.

DS4 depends on what equiptment your coming from doesnt it cisco or motorolla bsr? Ex Telewest area here and DS4 has had nothing since 50mb change.

Not all areas use all 4 downstreams, and as for powerlines.... he does says he's tried direct to the router with the same results.

As for my correct / uncorrectables - they are at around 300 for each, with uptime at 78 days.

Sorry to highjack, but it doesn't really warrant its own thread...

Do you Virgin 50Mb guys still get uncapped downloads and if so, is there any indication that this will stop?

Secondly, did you have to pay £55 up front for installation and connection? They won't let me do a self-install for some reason.

I just brought got 50mb and they installed it today and i installed the router they gave me. While installing the router with ethernet I did a speedtest and I got 50mb but when switched to my wireless started getting only around 37mb so I think wireless is the problem

Any luck with this mate?

I had to pay the £55 installation fee when I signed up in January, but I don't know if anything has changed since then. I doubt it has. Because it's on the new DOCSIS 3 platform you "need" an engineer to visit to install it and make sure it's working properly. That's the official VM line anyway. To be fair the guy who came to do mine was a straight up chap, very honest about VM as a company and certainly knew his cable broadband! Just a case of biting the bullet I'm afraid.

It's definitely worth it though, because there's still no caps, throttling or STM on the 50 meg product at all. Although there have been rumours of them being introduced "in the future" that's never materialised so far and doesn't seem to be any closer to fruition AFAIK. I'm getting 50.4 Mbps downstream 24/7 without issue, and pulling between 500GB and 700GB on average per month. I'm also running a couple of servers on and off, so it's fair to say 50 meg is definitely a truly unrestricted service. :)

Thanks for that :). Sounds good but still debating whether it's worth it for me, who is a casual user at the end of the day.

Are you on VM already? If so just go for it. Installation fee aside (it's only a one-off after all) the 50 meg package itself is only a couple of quid dearer than 20 meg. Well worth it just to avoid the STM/throttling on lower packages, even if you're only a "casual" user. At least that way you can watch iPlayer and download games without having to plan around several hours of congestion and throttling. Have a think; but you know you want to. :D

@bummer - Not had a chance to look in the box of bits in the loft, but I have to get the suitcases down for holiday so I'll check tonight.

@RobbieG - Still no capping and has been no word since launch about when they will introduce it. They wont do self install as the engineer is SUPPOSED to ensure the power levels are correct. The only way to correctly adjust this is by moving you up or down the panel in the cab which means no self install. You can use attenuators your end but trying to get people to do that self install is a bit of a headache and not a plug and play job.
