Well the fruits of my cheap car thread arrived today. Really pleased with it overall, it's a great cruiser and a really nice car for the money.

Drove it back from Newport today and noticed a few minor niggles so wanted to ask about them.

First is the clutch, sometimes it judders as it bites. Not badly, but it's noticeable. Doesnt slip or anything and the pedal feels fine - reckon it's anything to worry about?

Secondly, a few times after I got back and started it when it was warm (had been stopped for a few minutes each time), it started but died again straight away. A blip of the throttle before the revs drop and it's fine.

Finally, the air con isnt blowing cold. It was a cold day when I looked at it so couldnt really test it. I'm hoping it's just a regas needed, but is there anything I can check? The compressor doesnt click when the AC is turned on but both radiator fans run. I believe a pressure sensor stops the compressor from engaging when it's low on gas. I'm considering taking it to Kwik Fit tomorrow (yeh I know) because they have a "colder air con or your money back" guarantee.

Thanks all :)

There's a newport in Essex as well I think, but yes, south wales :)

Will hopefully get some pics tomorrow.

How do they go about proving this? Do they use a hand held temperature sensor with before and after measurements? If so, beware of a simple scam to frig this so called colder or money back, pay attention to how close the guy holds the sensor to the air vent. It would be dead easy to get whatever "colder" temperature you like simply by holding it closer to the vent for the after reading.

I'm suprised you never noticed the clutch thing on the test drive

Could be contaminated clutch surface, perhaps you have a fluid leak somewhere?

Either way welcome to the world of older cars, where random repair bills become part of your monthly outgoings..

If you complain to HQ you'll get your money back (or atleast I did, with minimal effort required), no matter what the branch claim

So already this car will be costing you more money per month compared to the saab?

As all you did with the saab is fuel it? :D comedy.

Anyway not to troll my boss took his Mini Cooper to Kwik Fit for a re gas on that money back thing and he actually got his money back!

The aircon issue can almost certainly be resolved with a can of R134a from Halfords, sorted mine just great, it blows ice cold and noise free now.

The clutch, hmmm that sounds more serious ...as Fox said, could be a contaminated surface and the warm start issue is probably just a sensor, in all likelihood when the car is cold the ECU runs in a closed loop, yet when it's warmed up a plethora of sensors come into play ...it's very likely one of these causing your problem. Hopefully not the ECU it's self, it 'might possibly' also be an issue with the plugs or distributor if the car has one, but if there was an issue with the plugs I would expect the problem to manifest it's self when the car was running and warm not just when you try and start it.

Anyway it is your sworn duty to OcUK Motors to get some pictures up asap.

It didnt do it on the test drive, it's intermittent and only slight.

Not even remotely, I think you've totally missed the point of what I was doing... I'm well aware an older car can throw up bills - that was considered when I made the decision to change, but thanks for your helpful input

Cheers for being helpful rather than making daft digs at my choice :)

I did look at those cans, thinking at 30 quid it would be worth a punt, but they were 49.99 and you needed to buy the hose separately, which they didnt have any of!

I'm not too bothered about the clutch at the moment - apparently it's quite common on these and is often just uneven wear. It might need replacing 10~20k down the line but thats not a huge issue.

Likewise, the warm start thing doesnt seem to be uncommon - seems a lot of owners just accept it as "one of those things" but it's normally just a relay that needs replacing. Off to kwik fit after my coffee, if I can throw them 60 quid for a cold car then I'll be more than happy with my purchase in the mean time and I'll leave the other things to see if they develop

My clutch has been juddering very slightly for years if you don't give it quite enough gas when pulling off with no adverse effects :p
