Every dad's duty

Used to sit on my dads knee as a kid too, the truck was the best though.

One of the grils at work, done it with her kid in a near enough empty car park. Moving between spaces. Someone called the police and she got made to feel like utter crap.

:(

My dad let me do the steering whilst on his lap when I was a youngun in our old Volvo 240 tank. Usually went to carboots waited till everyone had gone and used the empty fields. This was back in the days when carboots didn't cost £20 to pitch up...

Also done the gears for my mum as some people here did.

When i was a kid (about 12 - 14) i used to clean my dads mates lotus elise ... And in return i would get a tenner and also a ride home in it ... I remember once we went to a local industrial estate and he let me drive it and i think i was grinning for weeks after :p

Sam you struggle to see over the steering wheel now, how did you manage at the age of 14, even in an elise :D

While we were out at Longleat yesterday, driving on the private roads around the estate, I let my 6-year-old girl sit on my knee and steer while I did the pedals and gears. She loved it and now keeps asking me when she can drive my car again.
This was the norm when I was a kid. Sitting on dad's knee and driving the car was a right of passage for every child. These days though it seems to be unusual and in fact when I told some friends of mine, they were taken aback as if I'd done something very irresponsible.

So, did you guys drive like that with your dads? What car did you drive?

For me, it was a 1975 Rover P6 3500S which I drove on Braunton Burrows while my dad did the pedals. I recall nearly running my mother over.

Yea my dad let me drive his old Jag.

My dad would never, ever let me drive his car. Even when I was taking lessons- he still won't let me drive it now. Very much a control freak.

Thankfully my mum let me have a few goes without him knowing, haha.

I'd sit on my dads knee and steer/drive the car into the garage while he did the pedals! I will be doing the same for my kids

used to drive around on dads knee when very young, then at 16 got firstly a renault 5 (£110) for my field which was great fun until we blew it up (me and a mate) , then got a 90s fiesta for £50 which lasted longer than we ending up using it, it got abused massively sliding around corners in the dust track we had created by driving over the grass so much.

Looking back at it i was surprised as i could have ended piling it into a tree at 30mph without wearing a seatbelt, silly parents haha! although youd have to be quite a tool to manage to crash a car in a field when your 30 odd feet from the edge of it!

thinking about it now, would love to get an old 4 wheel drive car and rag it around the field again, so much fun :D

My mum and dad were Land Rover enthusiasts and we owned a 1954 86" Series One. I used to 'drive' it on Brean Beach, first on my dad's lap just steering the wheel, then when I was big enough to reach the pedals my Dad actually taught me how to drive for real. It felt awesome to be driving a Landy completely under my control at the age of 12

Exactly the same car and year :D Somewhere, far from the internet, is a picture of me standing on the seatbox, age 5, steering with the my dad operating the pedals. At about 14 I was let loose on offroad trials in the same motor (which we still trial today :D )

I take issue with your "completely under my control" bit though, no-one has ever been in complete control of a Series Land Rover :p

I had a go at steering my uncle's MK1 Fiesta when I was about 6. It was a nasty green colour, but was great fun to drive.

Blimey.. Yes I remember doing this on a beach somewhere too :)

God knows what car it was though, my dad worked at a garage at the time and had a different car every other day :D

Dad let me drive his Nissan Cabstar and I also went for an unplanned drive in his Hilux when I took the hand brake off on a hill whilst he picked up the take away, he managed to get back in and stop the truck :p

Arhh I did indeed drive with my Dad, and both my Grandads, with my Dad I drove a Ford Grenada MKII 2.8 Ghia, with my Grandad I drove a Vauxhall Cavalier MK1 2.0 on the beech at Weston Supermare (I did it for quite a while too, I actually remember this quite well, the feeling I got ...fantastic fun) and I drove my other Grandad's Renault 18 2.0l :D

Come to think about it, My daughter (when about 9) steered my Artic around the yard where I was working - on a quiet saturday morning - I've continued this tradition without realizing it! :D
