How would YOU decrease the national debt?

Legalise cannabis and tax it heavily.

Surely that would make people go elsewhere for it and that will be from non legal sources which do not put tax revenue into the system ?

As for cutting the debt,

No family allowance / child tax credits for people with a joint income of 60k+.

Means testing for pensioners for winter fuel allowance so that only those in real need of it receive it. Why pay such an allowance to a wealthy pensioner ?

NHS surcharges introduced. If Mr X is admitted to A&E with a cut hand after punching a window while drunk, he gets a 100 quid surcharge. If he is on benefits then it gets deducted at source.

If you can get it cheap enough which you would then you can apply tax and keep it below black market prices.

I've been saying this for a while, charge for non-essential visits to the doctor aswell, and pretty sure this works in other countries.

I would double the Uni Fee

That would get rid of all the wasters doing mickey mouse degrees, but those with low wage parents would get a big discount

stop wasting money on roadworks.

not decide one day to reduce 2 lanes to 1 then think oh crap this is the busiest road in town and now its at a stand still...
lets add some traffic lights in...damn now we have made it worse.
ok lets make it 2 lanes in 1 direction and 1 in the other
oops still no good as everytime someone turns right from the single lane we get 1 mile tailbacks.
lets put it back to 2 lanes but only at certain parts...hmm we seem to be getting a few more accidents happening on this road, i wonder what caused them.

i think that we should do what the goverment are doing now are doing now as its what we need in the short term, we have spent too much in the last 13 years and now have the secound highist defecit in the world (Beaten only by America) though it is not the worst due to our GDP being high. Though if we cut spending we may have stand still in the econamy and become the next Japan.

More cuts can and should be made in certin areas of the education and health sectors as Labour have tripled spending in the NHS since it has been in power but their has been hardly any gains in the level of health care to the population and also Labour has increaed spending on education (not sure how much) which again has seen hardly any increase in our education system. However we should increase spending on apprentidceships, we have got riddin of much of this and this was a bad decission as many students do not like exams and prefer practical learning, this has lead to many kid not getting or few quilifactions meaning that they cant get a job and adding to the stress on our benifit system.

Another area i would like to see as stated by somepeople before me is caps on benifits so that people stop taking advantage of it. eg 16 kids=being able to live in a mansion.

Also we need a goverment that will not let everything go (protectionism) we have let too many things go that could have made our trade deficit good such as letting our ship building die to china where we could have changed it so that we did specalised ships such as cruise ships, oil rigs etc. All of this has gone abroud to Norway and America.

Also our goverment should fight for contracts and other investment ideas and not pass them up such as the wind terbines. The terbines are now made by the Dutch while we could have had them, and we are one of the biggist buyers of wind terbines.

We also need to force banks to change there money making stratagys, the banks are still using the same ways of making money that coused the credit crunch. Not only is this bad for us in the long run but also because of this banks are not lending money to bussiness's as they wont see money untill the long term and so companies are finding it hard to secure funds which causes many to fail and even more not to start up, this is important as Britain needs new ideas to export to other countris to gain money so that the country can stay a strong economic force.

There are more things that i would change but they are irelvent and not to do with the econamy as such but would benfit it, such as intraducing cow prottles into the classroom to keep students in line.

Its in the form of bonds, so a lot of money is owed to the people of Britain who buy bonds but after the goverment cant sell anymore to people in their own country they sell to other countrys, i believe that a lot of our bonds are owned by people in China. (Long term invetment)

what I don't get is who do we owe this debt to ?

Firstly, it is important to stress this government borrowing is different from external debt of a country (total owed by private and government sector) and the balance of trade (imports and exports)

The government needs to borrow because it spends more than it receives in tax revenue. To finance this shortfall the government (often through an intermediary such as the Debt Management Office in the UK) sell bonds, gilts and treasury bills.

These are bought by private sector institutions such as pension funds, investment trusts and banks.

The majority of these private sector buyers are domestic financial institutions. I.e. most UK debt is owned by the UK private sector.

However, a significant % of UK and US National debt is owned by foreigners.

Help and support the more affluent in our society willing to help those less fortunate.

Too much public money gets tossed in to a bottomless pit, throwing money at people that don't care because they have no hope,no future, only a life of unfortunate circumstance.

If those that want help were given the support in the short to medium term to raise people up, to build a future, to make people aware of themselfs and their greater protential, then a lot of that money that falls in to the bottomless pit will cease over time.

Move people away from that circle of no hope, policing, social care, the unhealthy burdens on the nhs will begin to drop.

Keeping the divisions in society, you keep throwing money away, it's that simple.
