So... my parents always do this. I never do and they get cross and take out the plates I have put in there to rinse them before turning the thing on. When I lived away from home I never had any issues with the dishwasher. I accept you have to clean the filter after each use but I argue rinsing one filter is more time/water efficient than rinsing every plate!!!!!

So - poll - rinse 'em or just shove 'em??

I find if you don't rinse the plates before putting them in the dishwasher then quite often it doesn't clean it properly. However if I'm rinsing the plates anyway then it's only a very short step to washing them so for a lot of the time I don't see much point in a dishwasher unless there's a lot of guests round.

Where is the point then?

We have a dishwasher in the house but it hasn't been used in 3~ years, quicker to wash them yourself.

It surprising how gunked up the insides mechanics of the machine can get if you constantly put very soiled dishes in. The cleaner the plate you put in, the cleaner it comes out and the cleaner your dishwasher will be

I tend to scrape of the scraps and give a quick rinse under the tap to remove any sources which were used.

I dont have a dish washer any more she left me! haha jokes aside i used to scrape the main bits into the bin but never washed them. That is what the machine is supposed to do!

This tbh. Makes more sense to just wash them by hand unless you have guests and are cooking a lot and just cba with all the washing up. But dishes should always be rinsed if they are going to spend any time just chilling there before the washer is switched on

the idea of a dishwasher is to wash dishes. so we just empty the plates and put them in. if you don't leave it theres no need to rinse as it won't have time to go hard and stick to the plate liks it would if left for a few days.

scrape it then dishwasher, you parents need to understand there's no need in that lol.

It's really not. Unless you're including the entire 2 hour cycle? :p

Well no, but it takes like an extra 10 minutes to wash plates for 3 people.

I can understand the point in large families mind you, but thats why you have kids. Certainly always one of my chores, still do even when visiting my folks.

Depends, if it's really mucky I will because sometimes I end up washing the stuff twice, when I do once in a blue moon

Rinse them if they have lots of "bits" left on them. If it's just had something like a salad then no. But it helps get rid of the bits and stops clogging up the filter. Changing the filter is a horrid task so I try and to do all I can not to! :p
