The Budget

I doubt it would ever come back down.

I also hope if it does go up they do not put it up on petrol. Or if they do add it to petrol they then decrease the petrol tax to take that into account.

Very little chance of that! Motorists always get screwed in the budget, and as we have been told everyone is getting screwed in this one, motorists will probably get extra screwed.
Personally I don't think we are in for just five years of pain,it will be much much longer.

I doubt it would happen, but I think Osborne and Alexander would be missing a trick if they didn't do this, it would be a very popular move that wouldn't cost that much, and would help set the tone of fairness that they are aiming for...

We shall see though.

This is going to affect everyone, everyone just needso suck up and take it all because of what the last goverments overspending during the last 13 years.

I swear to God, if one more person I speak to says the emergency budget was prompted solely by belligerent bankers - and they should be duly punished, I may explode. DEFICITS are not caused by bankers.

I feel I can confide in you OcUK.

Your saying it would be a very popular move to increase tax on petrol again?

No, it would be a very popular move to cancel the two planned increases that Darling left, and offset any vat rise with a duty reduction.

Unfortunately, the ability to actually think is not required to express an opinion, or indeed to vote, which is why we get so many stupid but popular decisions from our governments.

The above is just another example of abject stupidity and refusal to accept responsibility, usually from Labour voters.

If they put up vat on petrol and reduce duty by the same amount that wouldnt actually make them any more money to help with the deficit tho would it. Cant see this happening to be honest.

Surprisingly almost everyone one that has been whining to me is either a Labour voter or one of those "not voting" types. They're also all atheists, although I think that's unrelated :D.

Yep same here, it gets a bit tiring. To the point I will either nod along and go to my happy place in my head or just walk away.

Gave up a long time ago trying to put my views to others. :)

You want things cheaper, so MORE people buy them, and more shops are needed to sell them, and more ships are needed to import the extra goods, and more dockworkers, and ship captains, and ship hands, and delivery drivers and stock checkers, etc, etc are needed.

Selling more = good, selling less = bad, very very very bad.

I would suggest the absolute opposite! We need less stuff, less ships (especially as we already had a massive trade deficit), less delivery drivers etc etc. Selling more = bad! It's just this consumptive boom that's got us into this mess. It's not the 80's, 90's or even the 00's any more.

We are beyond the limits to growth, now testing the limits to collapse. The idea we can grow our way out of this mess through increased consumption is just ridiculous in my opinion.

Deficits not caused by bankers? Well... in 2006 and 2007 the deficit was just under 3% GDP, in 2008 it jumped to 5% and last year was over 11%.

Now what happened? Did the government massively increase spending in the last two years? Did the GDP fall massively? Did government's tax income fall?

The deficit was caused mostly by the reduced tax take during the recession. To say the deficit wasn't caused by the bankers is also to say the recession wasn't caused by the bankers. If the bankers were at least part responsible for the recession then they were also in part responsible for the deficit.

It's all very well criticising this, that and the other. Let's have some REAL budget solutions.

  • Tax on Giant pub games including Jenga to be decreased to increase people going back to pubs
  • Benefit cheats must cost this country millions, so tests to be introduced every 3 days
  • Get a 'life of balance' credit card for the nation and put the debt on that
  • Use the new Dyson airblade fan to power the offshore windfarms

The deficit was caused mostly by the reduced tax take during the recession. To say the deficit wasn't caused by the bankers is also to say the recession wasn't caused by the bankers. If the bankers were at least part responsible for the recession then they were also in part responsible for the deficit.
Please reread my post. The key word is "solely".

To blame anyone other than the reigning government is disingenuous.

Dolph and Mad Hatter (and others) always argued before the elections that the tory government could do the required cuts PURELY with efficiency savings, whilst not affecting in any way whatsoever ANY 'frontline' public services AT ALL!

Yup, I'm not joking, they actually said that day after day, week after week, before the election! It was kinda hilarious, although I did feel slightly sorry for the guys TBH - actually, really believing that ... :(

This afternoon we finally get to see if they were talking absolute cods-wallop or not. Finally, to see who was actually right and who was wrong during that 35 page 'who will you vote for' thread .. although my bet is Dolph and Mad Hatter will re-write history pretend they never argued it at all -- hoho .. how the great fall ..
