The Budget

All in all VAT to 20% mainly affects large purchases.

The most widespread thing it will affect is petrol/diesel pump prices I suppose.

I don't blame them for raising it, Labour wrecked the public finances so I think they had little choice.

Harman's a squawking harpie!

Budget was nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be,but maybe that was their cunning plan!

So that means every single (non essential) good in the country is going to be 2.5% more expensive.

Which is about the same as having a 2.5% pay cut.

If you GOT a 2.5% paycut, you'd be gutted. But 2.5% VAT increase? That's cool?

Hmm ..

wow, you pay VAT on your food?

Yeah that's a shame - I'd like to see a cut in fuel duty to compensate for that.

I liked his comment about looking into possibly having a variable fuel duty rate, to compensate for fluctuations in the price of oil. He mentioned a few things which I thought were very imaginative like that.

About the most fair way of raising some tax then isn't it, EVERYONE pays it ;)

Also, don't be silly. VAT increase of 2.5% is NOT the same as a 2.5% pay cut, unless you spend 100% if your wages on Vat-able goods!!!

I'm not bothered by the fact that VAT went up, it's that the Lib Dem's were completely against it and now all of a sudden Clegg has signed up for it.

Lying BS politicians.

RDM - You said they could sort out the finances without cutting ANY public front line services, by making departments 'more efficient'.

Did I? How interesting, go along and prove it. Let's hope your memory is better than your maths and economics knowledge.

You bought the toryies pre-election .. er .. 'joke'.

No, my main interest was "Not another Labour term", so it was all win for me.

hoho. er .. sorry!

The joke is your mental ability if you think a 2.5% increase in VAT is the same as a 2.5% pay cut. But amusing I saw that you declined to actually address your abject failure to understand finances and try and deflect your error.

Labour, speaking about legitimacy?
Oh Harriet.

Can someone clarify the public sector pay freeze for me.

Obviously we in the past have gotten our Yearly increment rise on whatever pay-scale you are on until you reach the top of it. And then you got inflation increase also.

So is this a freeze on both increments for 2years and inflation or one of them ?

I imagine that it would be a total freeze, or at the very least it would be a freeze on the incremental and automatic rises. Though I have sod all to base this on, I'm sure Nick Robinson will clarify it though.

It's a coalition, both parties have conceded certain things in order to form a working government that can ensure the countries prosperity and allow us to regain our once great economy. It's all about give and take, surely you have to appreciate this?

I would have thought the opposite to be honest, the incremental rises will be contracted in wont they?
