woah.. steady on. I'm just curious about what's causing the issue and how widespread it is, trying to get people to test it more thoroughly - if it is a major design flaw (as it appears) then i agree that a recall and redesign would be needed.

I've never owned an apple product, but do love the whole glass / metal of the iphone4.

Exact same thing that happened to Steve Jobs when he revealed the phone and everyone said would be fixed.

Oh dear :p

Not quite. Those problems during the keynote were down to an overloaded wifi network. That's why the 3GS comparison unit also wouldn't work

I tried the signal thing on mine and it does work. My phone's going to be in a case so personally it won't trouble me, it is an absolute shocker though and no doubt something will be done.

My only worry is that the thing that will be done will be a cheat in the way the signal bars work to make it look like it's not happening.

My wifi issue is an upload problem as far as i can tell. Streaming vids on youtube is fine - brilliant in fact. Searching for vids is as hit and miss as websites - I'm thinking its the uploading part that is causing issues.

Starting to think that it is perhaps a faulty unit that i have.

Or so we thought :)

whether you have sweaty hands or, this is unacceptable. nor is asking people not to touch that part of the phone, or only use your right hand. This is a phone, and a design fault like this is totally unacceptable. If they knew about it at Beta and did nothing about it then it is down right arrogant. If they didn't know about it then they are negligent and incompetent. If they know about it and thinks the bumper is the solution then that is sloppy. It is like the Leica M8 with the purple tint and ask users to buy filters.

There is only 1 way to fix this, redesign or fix it at the factory during production.

Agreed.

I cant understand people saying "I use a case so its fine", its far from damn fine when you have to hold the phone in a special way or use a case (not proven to help) to call people.

Some people have made a very good point in that, if it was Microsoft/HTC/Samsung having these problems, they would have been thrown to the lions long long ago.

Out of pure curiosity I took my case off my 3GS with iOS4, and had a go at holding the iPhone both just at the top loosely and then at the same connection point as the issue with iPhone 4.

I have full signal on both 3G and Wi-Fi that magically drops 3 bars and one Wi-Fi bar on holding it the 'antenna' way, absolute crazy! I use a case all the time but, it's terrible that such a issue occurs in it's natural state.

I wonder if it was a issue on the previous OS, as I shan't be restoring to find out.

Not at all given the problems HTC have had with the Desires pink screen and Evo loosing its screen has not nearly caused the uproar the iphone 4 problems have.

Its still not good enough that there are problems but its rapidly becoming the norm.

I've just made a call holding with both hands to test it, my dad could hear me crystal clear and I had full coverage the whole time

Same here, im a left handed phone user and no issues. No problem with the screen either, just that oranges transmitter near my house is on the blink and wont be fixed properly till the 30th!

The thing is that it seems to be a wide spread problem, to wide to be a glitch and it is a hardware fault. Those who don't suffer problems might just be close to a mast?

Found this posted about a year ago - same issue:

"In this video you can see how the reception of the new iphone 3GS is "Strange"
Without touch it looks normal, 4 bars 3G.
As i grab it with my hand (i just grab it, i'm not moving it away from it's original position)
the signal from 4 bars drop down to 1...sometimes also go in searching network...

Come on Apple, here there is something wrong with this phone!!! Fix it!!!"

No problems with mine im using a bumper though. I tried it without and it made no difference im sat outside work in my car posting this with 5bars.

Why can't I recreate this?

Why can't I recreate this?

It seems very odd. There are a lot of videos and reports being posted at the moment.

I suppose the only way we will know for sure is when Apple announce about it later on.

It certainly is a problem.

Well it's luckily not a problem with the handset I got...

If I hold the bottom left corner my signal does drop, but it doesn't lose 3G and doesn't drop calls/network...

I've noticed this with the 3GS but I can't say it's bothered me. So if it's along the same lines as that then I can safely say I won't find it an issue.

If, however, it's causing the phone to drop totally then yes, it will be a problem.

I have to add though, a LOT of these cases are with AT&T - is it something to do with their frequency and not ours, especially given that people in the UK are struggling to recreate this issue?

If i payed the amount apple are charging for one of these and it had the issue i would be asking for my money back!

If it was Sony or Microsoft then they would have been crucified by now.....

Must be an issue now that BBC are even reporting on it as their main news story fromm they Tech section...

Noticed myself that the fault is now amongst the top read news stories on the BBC news site and starting to appear on others news sites as well.

I would imagine that Apple's PR and Execs are meeting right now to work out a response.
