To go on the dole, or not?

If prides the only reason i dont see why you shouldnt just sign on. But its clearly not the only reason because if you didnt have any savings im sure you'd be straight on it.

I have never been on the dole but would take it if I were in your position. You pay into the system and once you are over this hurdle will continue to do so - so I see no issue of pride with taking what is your right.

You need to do it to keep the Tax office in line or you with a hole in your NI contributions.

I did the same when I was out of work a couple of years ago. I went about 3 months without signing on out of pride really which was silly on my part.

You pay into the welfare system while you're working so you're perfectly entitled to claim when you need it most.

*EDIT - Efour2's comment is a good point. The NI contribs are a big reason to sign on too.

Just don't, the stigma of having had claim the dole would put me off it until it was the choice between homelessness or claim personally.

Take your entitlement and use it for what it's there for - to help you with a small gap in employment.

The only shame is when people abuse this and claim long-term with little (if any) attempt at finding work.

its best to do it now before you get into an sticky situation financially. I think you should only worry about claiming job seekers if you dont plan to get a job, but thats obviously not the case here!

You are in a good position (Than others that are loosing jobs)

So don't spoil it because of pride. There is no shame in it, at least your are trying/will get a job

I'm claiming JSA for the first time ever, I knew my small redundancy pay out wouldn't last me very long and didn't want to end up using all my savings.

After claiming for nothing and working full time since I left school I don't feel too bad about it. Only problem is some of the people you have to mix with in the local job centre lol.

Swallow your pride and claim what you are entitled too, think of it as claiming back some of the tax you have been paying all these years.

This. Can understand your reasons for not wanting to aswell mind you.

I have to agree with everyone here. I've never been on the dole or claimed anything, but if I was in the exact same situation as you I wouldn't think twice about claiming, considering this is what the system is meant for and you have been contributing all the time while you were working.

Go for it, I was in a similar situation between a job and going back to college. Gap of around 4 months or so. I left it over a month before going on the dole and got given out to because there'd be a gap in my stamps!

I was told by the CBA that I could go on contribution-based JSA?

thats right, you have to meet other conditions as well, like i believe you need to have been working full time for at least 2 years.

you should sign on - you have already paid for it. At least you deserve it.

I was in a similar situation to yourself, but was not even eligible for contribution based JSA as I had not worked for two years (been doing a phd).

when I went to sign on I saw someone being advised (slowly and loudly) to watch more "English" TV, so that they would learn English and have more chance of getting a job! absolute joke- i do question how he has ever been in a position to claim, e.g how he got right of residency etc when he was a clear liability.

If you can, do, there's no shame in claiming Job Seeker's allowance, you paid your taxes and NI I assume from years in a job, you deserve it.

Personally I would, job seekers allowance is there for a reason, don't start spending your savings because you feel "guilty". You've paid your taxes, you deserve it.
