5970 xfire question?

Hi all

my brother recently got a new oc`ed system with a stock 5970 inside.
He was going to get another 5970 in the near future and have them in xfire.
I have been reading through the threads on the forum and have noticed some people say that if you have more than 3 gpus that the performance can suffer or that a 4th gpu wont really make any difference.
Would it be better if he got a different single 5 series gpu to go along side his current 5970?
And can anyone explain why having more than 3 gpu`s does not make a difference is this is indeed true.

thanks for any replies

I don't think the support is yet consistently available for many if any games regarding quad fire or quad sli. Three cards is about the limit atm iirc. So adding a 5870 / 50 next to his 5970 may be the better thing to do.

He was thinking purely about future proofing.
From what you guys have said it is`nt really nessecary yet but would you say its a good idea for the near future for future proofing?

Put the money in a pot and wait for the quickest graphics card available when the 5970 wont hold its own?? I personaly dont think you can futureproof a pc hardware changes so often... might aswell just leave it as it is until it doesnt run something and then look at your options??

I would go for a trifire instead since theres not any significant difference with quadfire. But the question is, does he really need all that power? What resolution does he play at?

The thing is if he does add a second 5970 I'm pretty sure the fourth gpu will be more or less redundant. It'll be idle a lot of the time. I guess its possible quad gpu support will move forward enough but who knows. I can't see it changing much in the 'near future'.

If he wants to future proof just put the money in the bank for when the next gen hits, shouldn't need more than a 5970 at the moment really.

He only plays at 1920x1080 and he does not use eyefinity either.
I know it is not nessecary for him to get any other sort of gpu as his 5970 breezes past every game he has on full detail with max super aa but unfortunatley he has a habit of buying things that he does`nt really need LOL

Some interesting reading though about maybe quad support will pick up but then again there is just as much chance that it won`t.

My bro actually is a long time member of this forum so i hope he see`s all your reccomendations and takes it all into account before deciding to spend any money.

After all its my birthday soon brother..... you could always buy me something instead LMAO

Buy another two 1920x1080 monitors? For you that is, not your brother, great birthday present ;)

I don`t have room on my small desk m8 LOL
As for my brother he already uses a £1500 52" lcd tv as his monitor due to his bad eyesight so him getting another two of them is completely out of the question as there is no way in hell they would even fit in his room LMAO

His brother sounds like a great guy don't you think?:) I have a brother who aint half bad either:D

I guess the 5970 could be clocked a bit and save the dosh for a better birthday prezzie:)

break out the dremel? or a new case, who needs an optical drive anyway take it all out to fit it in :p

How do you find the 4870x2? for new games and things? what power supply you running? I've got a 3870x2 at the mo :( but want something a bit meatier and not too bothered about dx11 yet and have seen some 4870x2s going fairly cheap second hand.

A nice idea and im tempted to ask for a new case for my birthday but theres one problem

All i seem to do lately is build computers(i did my bros new one) or mess about with computers im actually tired of messing about with them and i really cannot be bothered to put all my stuff in a new case LMFAO

Plus im entirely happy with my com in my sig it`s my bro who has the constantly upgrading bug LMFAO

As i said i got my 4870x2 as a gift from my brother when he upgraded so i went from 2x 8800 ultras in sli.

I too am not concerned about dx11 as i get to play all new games at full everything on my bros computer all day long i just get games for myself that i know he will not like and run them on my own pc.

Performance on the 4870x2 is great m8 i could enable aa where i couldnt before (even though i still dont bother) and everything i have ran on my pc runs lovely ,just cause 2 amonst others.

As i said earlier it does run hotter than my previous sli setup but i have been told they are supposed to run a little hotter than my old cards but temperatures are easily controlled under a air setup.

Bottom line is the 4870x2 is the best card ive ever had in my own pc and performance is great m8;)

Always wondered what people play to need a 5970 or two of them. As most have said, save the money and get a newer card in the future.

Who knows, one day we could get a card thats as fast as a 5970 with the power consumption of a 5770.
