Virus Alert!

I had the same thing happen to my laptop, i just formated the drive and reinstalled XP as i didnt have anything on it. But i will remember this if it happens again.

I much prefer XP to Vista or 7, I will be getting 7 for my new PC soon but I'll try and find a theme that is like XP because I love it so much. It's hard to change after more than 8 years of using it! :p

Funny that, the rest of the world has managed =/

Well it's not so much the actual OS that I don't want to change, it's the lay out of XP that I love. I just hate the weird task bar of 7 and the way all windows of the same program stack up and things like that. If I somehow change 7 to make it more like the layout of XP I would love it. Vista is second to XP, then 7.

This seems to be popping up a lot lately, In the last 2 weeks I've had 6 people with this virus/spyware, all using windows XP.

Malwarebytes in Safe mode sorted it out :)

Microsoft needz to sell moar Windows 7. ;) It's getting to be a pain on Windows boxes, this. To add insult to injury 99% of AV apps are simply rubbish at detecting and preventing this type of malware. :(

Could be getting in via outdated Flash or Java software on the system?

A strong possibility, especially on XP (no UAC). Don't forget to stay updated guys; you can always visit Secunia once every few weeks to make sure you're protected with the latest versions (Windows updates, Flash, Java, QuickTime, etc). :)

Updates could be the problem. My Java and Flash are up to date. But there is an update for the .Net Framework that I cannot install for some reason whenever I try. Doesn't really matter though as I should have a shiny new PC by the end of this summer with Windows 7 on it :D

I had this virus and it was a right pain to get rid of.

I think i used the same method as the 1st poster suggested.

For a bit of aftercare I suggest upgrading malwarebytes to the pro version as it will add extra features that will keep this PITA off your computer for good.

Also I should mention that this nasty piece of work changes on a daily basis which is why no anti-virus program can keep up with the changes.

Man, I love Weird Al, two great songs are "The saga begins" & "Amish paradise". Back to topic, I have dual boot windows & linux, I have Avast for linux, in case something like this happens to windows.

I've said to every one of them they need to upgrade to Windows 7, So far I've had no call outs from the people who are running Windows 7 infact add Vista to that also.

You can manually remove it, by removing it from start up within the registry and then removing the files and registry entries. Most malware can be removed like that, but just stop clicking and installing everything that pops up and you won't have to deal with virus scanners anymore.

I doubt this would work in this instance as this particular malware stops executables running making getting into the registry a bit....tricky...

It also causes slow downs and lockups when trying to open Explorer windows to try and access Program folders.

I'd sooner just run MBAM / Combofix scanners and get rid of it in one go and save the time and hassle of hunting through countless registry keys and folders on a machine that's already running poorly.

Your customers aren't very good at picking up malware and virus' then are they. :p

I've had to deal with a lot of infected Vistas :/

Not any Windows 7 so far though, but that's because we mostly support businesses. I can't see them going to Windows 7 until they get new machines.

You're statistically less likely to find infected Vista and W7 machines, and less likely again if they're 64-bit versions.

I've had a few on Vista but XP is still by far the highest for infections, probably as most people still run it.
