Hello all, my first post here. I've been reading these forums unregistered for a while and i'm very impressed with the amount of knowledge and patience shown towards new, hardware ignorant members like myself. So let me start by saying thanks :).

I'm looking to put together a new rig, starting with:

This bundle

The specs are:

- CPU: Intel Core i5 750 2.66GHz @ 3.80GHz
- Motherboard: Asus P7P55D-E Intel P55 (Socket 1156) DDR3 Motherboard
- RAM: Corsair XMS3 (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel
- Cooler: Akasa Venom CPU Cooler (Upgrade options available)
- Artic Silver 5 Thermal Compound

First, a really stupid question - i'm sure this bundle comes with a case, but if it doesn't im going to look like abit of a fool. So i thought i'd make sure - does it include a case?

Now, with that bundle i'd need a GFX card and a PSU, as i have a HDD, moniter, etc etc.

I'm looking to spend no more than £600 (i could go higher if i need too) so with that bundle i have roughly £150 left for the Graphics and Power. If i need extra cooling on the CPU(?) it would come out of that £150 too, but im not sure. This machine is going to be used for gaming.

So really im looking to squeeze as much out of that £150 as i can. Could i please have some recommenadtions for the Gfx card and PSU, or any general advice if im going about this wrong.

My moniter is 1680 x 1050.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Hi.

That bundle doesnt include a case, only what you see in the picture, cpu, motherboard, ram and cooler.

as for a graphics card and psu, these two will be perfect.

PSU- http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-017-CS

GRAPHICS- http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-011-HS&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1515

And you wont need any more cooling for the cpu.

So because the bundle doesnt have a case, these are two good cheap options,

£27- http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-002-XG&groupid=701&catid=7&subcat=1572

£43- http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-068-SV&groupid=701&catid=7&subcat=1092

Hi there, and welcome :D

Unfortunately, that bundle does not come with a case, it is just the components you list there :(

My first question is what will you be needing the computer to do?

Secondly, will you be needing an operating system or any peripherals and if so, should they be included in the budget?

Er, gaming

Yup, so it is.

To the OP: In that case I would suggest you not go for the i5 bundle. It is a lot of money to spend with a limited budget and will mean you cannot afford a particularly powerful graphics card (which is crucial for gaming).

I'd be happy to come up with a spec for you, I just need to know if you will need an OS or peripherals in your budget.

I have an OS, Windows 7 - 64 that i bought recently.

Forgive my ignorance, but i've not encountered the term peripherals before in this context.

No case, ok thanks.

I also have a PSU currently at 570, but im fairly certain that wont be enough to power this rig, but i could be wrong.

I could wait till i get paid again, but i'd rather not if its avoidable.

The PC will be used for gaming.

Thanks for the fast reply :).

What is the make and model of the PSU? a good 400W one like I linked too will cope fine.

Ah, very good.

A 570W supply could well be enough, It all depends on the quality. Do you know what the make/model number of the PSU is?

Just opened it up to have a look.

This is my PSU.

Sorry for the link, but im not sure which information on it is relevent and what isn't.

I wouldnt trust that psu with a £600 pc, one thing you dont sacrifice is the quality of the part that protects it.

with that in mind, and everything you need, I have come up with this.

The motherboard supports crossfire, so in a few years time, just add a second 5830.

OR

one single fast graphics card, but no crossfire, for obviously more money

+1 to the above builds

Personally, I really like the second one as a 5850 is a beast of a card. By the time you need to upgrade, an entire new generation will be out. I would also suggest going with this RAM instead. Everything else is excellent.

i have a 5850 i5 750 build and it is awesome... it came to £1000 for everything but well worth the money spent. the benchmarks for the intel i5 750 are a lot better too which will be able to cope with future gpu's added to your system

Sounds like a good system. However, I don't think OP has a large enough budget to afford an i5 rig + a good graphics card (the 2nd spec is already pushing it a bit). So if he did go for the i5, then he would be compromising on the graphics, which isn't a good idea for a gaming build.

yeah.

without using a crummy H55 chipset motherboard, the i5 750 option is around £680-690, and using the stock cooler

Just as an after thought - i have an ASUS P5N-E SLI Motherboard from my last build. I don't suppose that would work with this setup, and i could use the money from that on a 5850 instead of a 5830 card?

I'm guessing not, but its worth a try. :)

I would suggest not using that board. It uses a pretty crummy Nvidia 650i chipset. This board is OK for dual cores, but it really does not like quad cores.
