We in the West (I did certainly), often take for granted African wildlife so it's strange to think that lions, elephants, zebras, rhinos and cheetahs might not be around in the wild for much longer.

The poachers use GPS, air support and automatic weapons to cull thousands of animals. The SAS have even got involved.

Photographer Nick Brandt makes his money (some of his prints make $48,000) snapping the beasts up close, still using film. Check them out: they truly are epic photographs.

As ever, you're welcome!

I feel like my writing might be doing some good for the world with this article (a tiny, tiny amount perhaps, but still...), so please post it around forums or social networking sites if you want to spread the word. If nothing else, the pics make great desktops!

yeah, its cool for one, then it gets annoying. ott

Read more about Brandt: he does use photoshop, but never to add in things like animals that weren't there in the first place. I think it's kinda like 'what you see is what you get' but with the zits taken out.

Is it just me, or has the elephant's trunk been extended by quite a lot to make for a good picture?

If you look at the elephants below in the last picture, all of them have trunks that just about touch the floor.

He has a third book of photos coming out at some point. Maybe it's going to be cover-to-cover meerkats!

Their heads are also all clearly held in a much higher position, look at the tusks.
