Remote Desktop over the internet?

I'm trying to setup remote desktop to access a Win XP Pro machine from another location over the internet.

All guides on the net, includimg microsoft, only help if you were on the same local network, of course if i was then i'd simply get up and walk over there!!

Can anyone help me on how to set it up to work over the internet??

Ive got:

My home external IP address (router)
My remote external IP address (router)
Internal IP addresses for both home and remote machines
The remote PC name & username/password

I've set the remote router to forward the RDP port 3389 to the remote computers internal IP address.

However nothing works! Please help!
 
not directly answering your question

but i use teamviewer...

no setting up , easy as they come

just install on both pcs and off you go
 
make sure the PC your connecting to is the pro version or upwards of xp, vista, W7 etc (Home/Home Premium doesnt come with RDP server, only the client) and make sure RDP is enabled and allowed through the firewall of that PC (it should be allowed in the exceptions as standard from XP SP2 onwards I believe)

Forward port 3389 in the router to the internal IP of the PC you want to connect to.

From your PC simply connect to the external IP of that router (may be useful to setup no-ip or dyndns or something incase the external IP changes). the address you connect to should look something like: xx.xx.xx.xx:3389 where x is the external IP.

You might need to make sure that its the same version RDP on both machines so check windows update etc.

But as Paul11 suggested, Teamviewer is a good alternative that just works with no setting up. You will need to set it up for "permanent access" so the password doesnt keep changing and so that teamviewer is loaded with windows (by default you need to be logged on and have teamviewer open to use it)

I've done that and all i get is page not found :confused:
 
Perhaps he is used to Remote Desktop via RWW?

Either way, mstsc.exe is what you need. Can also be found in Start > All Programs > Accessories > Communications.
 
out of curiosity, can you even ping the remote router from your PC? There may be some settings in the router that blocks echo/ping requests so you don't get any kind of response that will need altering temporarily.

I guess another obvious one is to double check the external IP of the router is correct?
