iOS4 - iPhone 3G

What about the App Store in regards to reverting to 3.1.3? I'm assuming that if you try to download or update any apps it's going to tell you that you need the newest OS even if you actually don't?

I am starting to find Safari becoming increasingly slow making it only suitable for a quick bit of browsing. Dug out my old iPod Touch 2g and updated it to iOS4 - the difference is like night and day. :o

This is just getting ridiculous now. Everything is so sluggish; using safari, browsing my contacts, answering the bleedin' phone, sending text messages. I've tried to restore many times right now and I still get the same issues. My iPhone 3G 16GB is pretty much unusable most of the time!

The only problem I see with downgrading is that my apps on the PC are now at iOS 4.0 so downgrading will not allow me to run most of them... damn frustrating.

I haven't had a problem with running any apps as yet, what ones give grief?

Ok perhaps I have jumped the gun somewhat. I would assume that by having my apps at 4.0 on the computer, installing to a 3.1.3 device won't work as they will be looking for 4.0 api's etc?

I may be wrong, but I think there's a certain degree of backwards compatibility. Certainly at this stage of release, any developer releasing pure 4.0 apps would destroy their yet-to-upgrade market.

All I know is Angry Birds still works. :)

Well I've just been away to London for a few days and it's been a nightmare.... Maps takes forever to update, location tracking seems way out sometimes, my emails come in occasionally (if I do a hard reboot they all come in, if I connect to wifi they come in, but they won't update via 3G), and I had messages trying to send for 2 days.....

I'm going to try a full restore and failing that, downgrade it.

I may also nip into the Apple Store in Newcastle and see what they say.... I realise it's an old phone now, but I just don't think Apple should have released IOS4 for the 3G if it was going to cause this many problems.

Definately interested in hearing what they say.

Well, I made an appointment with the local Apple store and have just gotten back.

Basically I explained that it was running like a dog, the locator in maps was way off, and my emails weren't syncing properly, just now and again (loads at a time) rather than pushing as it was set to.
He asked if it was PAYG or contract, model, etc.
I asked if it was possible to revert back to 3 as my issues started with IOS4. He had a look at the phone, and commented that everything was running really slowly, even the camera app was taking ages to load, and advised that he thought the upgrade hadn't worked correctly.
He spoke to another Genius and asked what the policy was and was told it was up to him, they are to take into consideration the age of the phone and the condition. He checked it over, said it had been well looked after (he also checked the water damage sensors!), and said he would swap it for another.

So, I've walked out of the shop with a replacement 3G.

One thing he did say which was interesting was when I asked if it was worth me trying the upgrade again. He said to wait a couple of weeks as there is an update to the OS due..... Sounds to me like it's an optimization for the older devices.....

Overally I'm pretty happy with the outcome, I just need to try to work out how to pull my old contacts back from ITunes now....

I upgraded my 3GS on Monday as I have decided not to get the 4G yet.
It seems ok, though a few games are laggy, worst thing is the battery life, it is terrible now.
Won't even last working day now and my car kit wont charge it, though it did on the old OS.

Updated to ios4, wont sync any app at all from my backup in itunes except angry birds. Select them all only angry birds goes across, having to redown them 1 at a time from appstore on phone. Annoying.

My wifes 3G is now unusable nearly, it takes about 30 seconds to recognise her swiping the screen to unlock it, 30 seconds to get into Messages. Awful update.

Is there anyway to restore the phone to older system?

Good news and good to hear.

Call me stupid but I think I may have just cracked this. :p :o

I haven't tried folders on my iPhone but this morning put all my Apps into folders and just left some of the Apple ones on the spring board.

And now my iPhone works really fast - but to make sure do a reboot after putting everything in folders.

Can anyone confirm my findings on theirs? :)

exactly the same with me, I've got a 3GS but I had about 6 seperate screens. I did this after I updated, moved all my apps into folders and no lag.
I reckon it uses less active memory.
